When you look at your house as a long term living and you are raising your children, you have to think about how it will be in 15 to 30 years. I know that Walt Whitman high school was not good fifteen years ago......and this is from a people I knew who went to that school. In her situation , she was very open minded and had friends of all races. It did not work out for her however when she was dating an African American and some people really hated her, wanted to fight her. Now , thats real life , not statistics. I would actually go into the school and visit instead of looking up statistics.Regardless of statistics, it is always good to think outside the box as to what interactions happen at the school. If there is gang activity etc then it gets in the way of having an education. Part of my family is hispanic, and they live in a hispanic neighborhood. They would never live in Huntington station . It has nothing to do with the shopping or people scaring them, although the shopping has not developed over the years. My relatives are a strong family but would not even live in a place that is known to be distressed. Why would they want to? Its not good for their kids. They are not naive . They know what can happen. Will anything happen, I hope not but why move there when you can live in comparable areas with a much better school district and it wont be so hard to resell. Its only good because you are really diverse and want to be integrated. Well, my kids go to a school that is 90 percent white. We used to live in Hicksville which is pretty diverse now. It was not a good experience for my son because all the diverse people have their own community and would not participate in birthday parties and other things on the weekends so my son had less friends. My husband is from Washington Heights and everyone he knew moved away from there because they wanted a better place to raise kids. Brooklyn to Huntington station ???? If you dont have kids, I could see it or if you are downsizing and do not have to think about the schools. This thread really surprised me. I was four when I moved from 11 th street and it was changing . The houses didnt look as nice anymore,That was 30 years ago. Out of sight , out of mind. Even if your not passing through there on a daily basis and make a left instead of a right...its still there...

I'm confused by your point of view. You state Walt Whitman is a "bad" high school, yet it's Regent's test scores surpass or meet the NY average in every category but Earth Science. Thirty years ago the houses didn't look as nice anymore 30 years ago? Not sure what you mean by that comment either or what area you are referring to because there many nice homes street after street- and that's on the RIGHT side.

I can admit I was wrong about the statistics ...I guess Huntington HS has more problems? Its rough for a lot of teenagers and I wouldnt want my kids to find extra trouble if they can avoid .I do think the the area of New York avenue looks somewhat distressed or just not as nice as it has the potential to be...the houses too. It is not miracle mile but its fine surprises me but I guess its in the eye of the beholder. It was nice in the early 80's and I dont think it has been updated since.
Things that might raise a red flag is the fact that the gang task force focuses in Huntington as one of its main areas of concern...It seems indisputable now that there's a gang violence problem in Huntington Station. The Suffolk County Police Department is cracking down in the neighborhood, which it calls one of three gang "hot spots" - along with Brentwood and Wyandanch-North Amityville - in the areas it patrols.( from Oct 21, 2009)
Newsday --Gun shots, fights and stabbings all within blocks of Jack Abrams Intermediate school in Huntington Station are not acceptable, the president of the Huntington school board told the Huntington Town board. This is on topix I think from March. Even if you are not living or sending your kids to that school , I guess if your kids make friends in Huntington station, make sure they dont go to that school ...and I wouldnt want to make the mistake of being near that school. Another one--- charged in Huntington Station stabbings...someone stabbed at 500 pm? There are TOO MANY violent crimes that really stuck out for me. I didnt just pick the worst ....there are more shootings and home invasions, like I said ....this is the crime you hear about , what about the crime that doesnt make the news for the day.
Driving through the area on a sunny day doesnt give you real perspective.
This I found just because I was curious about a thread saying the neighborhood was turning bad 30 years ago.
THERE HAS BEEN A COVER-UP FOR Y E A R S ON THE VIOLENCE IN HUNT STA.... mark Cuthbertson and his lacky Petrone have directed the SCPD AND the media NOT to report the SHOOTINGS/STABBINGS that happen CONSTANTLY in the station.

How do I know this?? I work in the E/R at Huntington Hospital!!! Also, no mention of MS-13 involvement, huh, Petrone??????

Took me five minutes on Topix to see its even worse then I thought.
So many nice places to live on LI ...but I think Huntington station is worse than a lot of parts of Brooklyn.

I lived in Bushwick for 2 years in the 90's and honestly would feel more comfortable there than in parts of HS. When I first moved to LI, I was driving up NY Ave and saw a guy get stabbed by 4 other people at 7PM in the evening, right at that light where there's a gas station on one side and a strip mall with a latino church/bar/quickmart. Another time I saw a HUGE 20-25 person brawl right on the street on NY Ave a bit further up. The cops were having major issues keeping it in check.

I'm sure there are parts that are nice, but I would not live anywhere near that stretch on NY Ave considering I see a problem almost every time I drive up it.

EDIT - I just read that post prior to mine about the mid day stabbing, I wonder if that was the one I saw?

If the local politicians there get off their duffs and address the significant QOL issues and the growing "might get shot in a driveby even though not in a gang" issues, maybe HS can be improved significantly and made more comfortable and attractive to middle class families again. My suggestion from another thread:

As a resident of Huntington, I'd say that both of the school districts are about the same in quality.. Walt Whitman may be a little better.
People have said this over and over again but avoid Huntington Station.

Oh my home is not anywhere near the Jack Abrams school....much further south...I think it's important to remember that Huntington Station covers a large area and most people say "it's terrible" and then focus on the area around the train station and the area where the day laborers hang out. Is the area around the train station a bit hairy- heck yea! Is there a gang problem in that area? Heck yea!

But I will tell you this.....my husband and I weren't the ONLY non-gang non-illegal alien couple looking to buy homes in this area. We talked with several couples looking in this area, at open houses, because of the property taxes and low cost of the homes ( a lot of house for the money) and saw it as a good buy. Think about it....some of these homes in this area were sold to people that couldn't afford them. There are a lot of homes in HS that are distressed sales - being snatched up by people that CAN afford them - young single professionals, young couples and downsizers. Don't be surprised if HS starts changing a bit....perhaps New York Avenue will get a face lift.

I'll be at council meetings screaming to get the illegal flop houses and slumlords taken care of, yell about the gang problem...whatever it takes! =)

I am glad to hear you saw several middle class people looking for homes there too. That will help with the changes that need to be made if they plan to be as politically active as you are planning to. Illegal aliens and gangbangers don't buy homes, people who harbor them for profit do. Be aware, though, that although you met some middle class people buying homes there too, HS is one of the target areas on LI for significant amounts of investors buying there to cash in on being absentee landlords to hoards of illegal aliens and gangbangers stuffed into one single-family house together or chopping up a single-family house into illegal apartments. They have gotten away with this for decades and still want to feast on HS as much as they can instead of go to places with tougher regulations who will fight them back.

Yes, please be politically active and let the politicians know you will not have the wool pulled over your eyes!

Good luck to you!

Many places that have a "Huntington Station, NY 11746" mailing address (as well as a "Dix Hills, NY 11746" and "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address because there is no "South Huntington, NY" mailing address) are in South Huntington.

A map of the Hamlet of South Huntington in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County:
