East Norwich community mix???
Hi,
We are Manhattanites looking at homes in East Norwich as we love the woodsy area and the California ranch homes. However the wife is concerned that the area is not "mixed" and there is very little Jewish, white-collar population (that is what we are). We dont want "Jappy" neighborhoods (i.e.: Great Neck/Roslyn/5 Towns) but just a place that is mixed where we can get be comfortable with the 'hood (something akin to Bayside or Port Washington...I grew up in Bayside)
Can anyone give me some clues into this area (near Pine Hollow Golf Club) as there appears to be very little written about the town/hamlet.
I showed her that the Oyster Bay Jewish Center was just a mile away from these homes, but she (any my mother-in-law) are just not convinced!
Any insights are appreciated
Thanks

There are some Jews there--my uncle lives there. I wouldn't call it super-Jewish though.
All the affluent North Shore areas can have similar issues to the "Jappy" areas... it's a mindset that transcends religion.

For those who may not be familiar with East Norwich
If your family is secular, and not even mildly observant, than you should have no great problem in the Hamlet of East Norwich and the East Norwich-Oyster Bay Central School District.
For those who may not be familiar with East Norwich:
East Norwich is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of East Norwich in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Village of Upper Brockville, the Hamlet of Oyster Bay and the Village of Oyster Bay Cove; on the east by the Village of Oyster Bay Cove; on the south by the Hamlet of Syosset and the Village of Muttontown; and, on the west by the Village of Muttontown and the Village of Upper Brookville.
East Norwich is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have an "East Norwich, NY 11732" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of East Norwich are in the Village of Upper Brookville, the Hamlet of Oyster Bay and the Village of Muttontown; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of East Norwich that have an "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" mailing address. (Additionally, the "East Norwich, NY 11732" postal zone is a "bifurcated" postal zone: it consists of two (2) non-connected areas, with the two (2) areas separated by the "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" postal zone.)
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Thanks for response.
Yes, we looked at an open house yesterday owned by middle-aged Jewish couple. They agreed with you that the area is sort of mixed, Jews are there - - but not super Jewish.

East Norwich is mixed, but if you are looking for Jewish centers or places of worship there are plenty directly south in Syosset and Woodbury.
They might be too 'JAPpy' but I know on S. Oyster Bay Rd. in Syosset there is a Jewish center and they seem to be more down to earth and not so centered on status.
I happen to be Catholic, but have found East Norwich to be a pretty good mix of people who all get along regardless of wealth or religious beliefs.
Th Sid Jacobsen center is literally 10 minutes down 25A in Roslyn and they offer all kinds of services and activities.

Walter - who provides you with boundaries of hamlets? While cities, towns and villages have defined boundaries, one person's hamlet may not be another person's hamlet.

It is a mix. I know someone who lives there who is Catholic, and they and their Catholic neighbors send their children to Catholic school. I agree with the above posters, you will find people of the Jewish faith there, but probably not those who are very strict about their faith.

East Norwich
I just read your inquiry about East Norwich. My family and are Jewish and have been living in East Norwich for the past 14 years. I know your posting is now several months old, but I can answer questions about the small Jewish community in East Norwich/Oyster Bay.
