I do not understand why people overlook Longwood and Pat/Med if they are looking around the 300-400 range.

Do you mean Patchogue/Medford? I guess I never really thought seriously about anything beyond the Islip/Dix Hills slice of Suffolk County. I really love being in the commotion of central/western Nassay County (South Shore). I love being close to either the Wantagh Pkwy or RM Cwy as well as Shea Stadium (of course). What is the trip from Patchogue to Bethpage/Farmingdale? Must be like 30 minutes or so, right? I guess it depends on if and where I can get a job, too. I'll check out Pat/Med right now. Thanks!

Wow! I never knew I could buy a decent sized and quality home for that little on LI !! I am not at all familiar with that area, though. I grew up in Farmingdale and spent a lot of time in the Nassau and western Suffolk County South Shore towns. I never made it much past West Islip unless I was on the LIE headed for my buddy's place in Stony Brook or if I was headed out to Montauk. I was planning to change careers simply for the income, but I can afford a 350k home on my current teacher's salary - including a monster downpayment, of course. The only problem with that is getting a position in a LI school...

I'll keep checking, and if anyone has any other ideas, Im happy to hear. I'll be visiting my folks almost every month throught the summer, so I'll drive through Patchogue...

Yes, Patchogue Medford. For the prices 300-400 you can get alot for that in nice condition. Both of my sons teachers work and live in the district. and both are alumni of the district also.

As an 86 graduate...Three Village is VERY overated.
They were the "IT" district way back then....not so sure if thats still the case.

When my Sister graduated in the late 90s there were lots o' rich latch key kids on drugs going nowhere.
(Waaaaah...Mommy and Daddy dont love me ....they only got me a C-Class....I think Ill snort dope till they get home from Europe)

This is the stuff Newsday never reports because of property values.
(Nor will they cover all the Campus Rape cases at SUNY SB)

I guess everyones out working to foot the taxes...too busy to parent.
Its sad...the Middle Class packed up and left 3V YEARS ago.

I know two people from my Graduating class that were able to buy a home there after College.
(That should speak volumes about the district)

I'd go Port Jeff if you need to impress 'em....or if you want a really really great underrated school district... go Rocky Point.

As for why not Pat Med.... my guess is it's the undocumented laborers and Section 8 wandering the streets aimlessly.

I went to elementary at River Ave...The years have not been kind.
Patchougue was BEAUTIFUL when I was a kid....theyre trying but I think the war's been lost.

I think Longwood has improved greatly. Gordon Heights has a come a VERY VERY long way.
IMHO thats the most improved town in Brookhaven ....followed by Rocky Point/Sound Beach and parts of Shirley.

Best

C

Gordon Heights ; no way.

And I live a few blocks from it. I live in Medford but the school is Longwood.

Pat/Med is ok. Sachem is ok.

But all three are huge districts.
Stay away from Gordon Heights.

True Gordon Heights is a predominantly African American community ....but truth be told I think its looking pretty good.

Ive seen Gordon Heights improve greatly over the past few years while the surrounding areas of Coram seem to be in constant decline(Hoo-ray for Brian Foley), overrun with section 8 housing and sex offenders.

Good for Gordon Heights....they've always gotten a bad rep.

Longwoods problems dont stem from Gordon Heights these days (that had been a convenient target for many years)they need to look to the local space cadets combing the aisles of the Middle Island Walmart.

I'd strongly sugggest spending a few minutes on line there, and ask yourself.

"Can I really live with these people?"

Cheap apartments do not exist here, unfortunately.
It's such a joke that the powers that be keep saying 'oh, we must keep the young families and young adults here' yet little is done for them.

Reality check..not everyone can take on a huge mortgage or gets paid a huge salary.
