Default Better to live...Williston Park or Syosset!

Which do you think is a better place to live, Williston Park or Syosset? I have heard great things about the area. I would like to live somewhere with a low crime rate, affordable living (apartment), somewhat of a short distance drive to malls, and also an easy commute to NYC by train. I have also considered other nearby cities such as Albertson & Searingtown (near Williston park) and Jericho & Woodbury (near Syosset). The Old Westbury, Brookville, Muttontown areas look nice to live as well, but I see they can be a little pricey.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks.

Hi NY2CA,

We also considered Syosset in our house hunting process, but decided to purchase a house in Williston Park instead. Williston Park may have more modest homes, but we liked the fact that the neighborhood is very pedestrian friendly. There are numerous small shops, a supermarket, drugstores, etc. located on Hillside Ave.

Are you looking to buy or rent an apartment? Have you considered Great Neck or Garden City? These areas also meet your listed criteria.

After almost a year long search, we too found Williston Park most appealing for the same reasons as newmom, as well as the schools, parks, town pool & access to highways/public transportation. Syosset was nice too, but definitely more pricey and less quaint.

Williston Park: Which School District: Herricks or Mineola?

West of Willis Avenue goes to Herricks and East of Willis goes to Mineola.

The best deals are in the Mineola School District which is good, but not as highly regarded as Herricks.

Probably for renting, Williston Park. To buy a home, I would go with Syosset.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Williston Park

For those who may not be familiar with Williston Park:

Williston Park is a village (incorporated in 1926) in the center-south part of the Town of North Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Williston Park in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Albertson; on the east by the Village of East Williston; on the south by the Village of Mineola; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Herricks.

Williston Park is one of those villages and hamlets on Long Island where most of the places with the community name in their mailing address are not in the village: places that have a "Williston Park, NY 11596" mailing address that are not in the Village of Williston Park are in the Village of East Williston, the Hamlet of Roslyn Heights and the Village of Mineola.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Default For those who may not be familiar with Syosset

For those who may not be familiar with Syosset:

Syosset is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Syosset in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of East Norwich, the Village of Oyster Bay Cove and the Village of Laurel Hollow; on the east by the Hamlet of Woodbury; on the south by the Hamlet of Plainview, the Hamlet of Hicksville and the Hamlet of Jericho; and, on the west by the Village of Muttontown.

The Hamlet of Syosset has a different border than does the "Syosset, NY 11791" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Syosset, NY 11791" address and not be in the Hamlet of Syosset and a place can be in the Hamlet of Syosset and have other than a "Syosset, NY 11791" mailing address): places with a "Syosset, NY 11791" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Syosset are in the Village of Muttontown and the Village of Laurel Hollow; and, at the same time, there are places that are in the Hamlet of Syosset that have a "Jericho, NY 11753" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Default Living Syosset

Hi,
Im a Mom and I live in Syosset. We are in the Berry Hill Elementary school very good schools and caring community. Easy access to trains for the city, Easy to get to the town of Huntington for dining and fun. Also very easy to get to Walt Whitman Mall. However I would look on the north side of Syosset, closer to 25A.
Good Luck in your search.

I live in Williston Park and have relatives in Syosset. You will probably be much happier in Williston Park. It is a great place to walk around--there are small shops and restaurants. You can't do that in Syosset--it's all main roads. The people in Williston Park are much more down to earth, which definitely translates into the school districts. If you have children, they will most likely find their peers much more tolerable in Herricks or Mineola than in Syosset. High instances of snobbery and snootyness in Syosset. I'm sure there are wonderful people in Syosset, but it's definitely much cozier in Willie P.
