Bohemia area
I'm considering a contract job in Bohemia near the airport. It would be for about a year but would have very good pay. I'm thinking about getting an apartment close to the area but am not too sure where might be a good location.
I'd like to keep my commute under 15-20min, its hard to tell what traffic is like from google maps and such. I don't want to live in a city/urban environment, I'd rather live in a suburb. A place where I have easy access to quick shopping and such but not paying way too much for rent (maybe $1200/mo, not to exceed $2500 for rent/utilities/etc). I'm a single guy (26) so I don't want to live in the middle of nowhere or in an area where everyone is married and retired. I'd like to be in an area where there's something to do. This is less important but it would be nice to beable to have quick access to parks with large open fields as I have picked up flying RC airplanes as a hobby.
I'd appretiate any suggestions. I also realize some of the things I'm looking for may be mutually exclusive. I've spent quite a bit of time reading through this forum and have found many good suggestions, but I thought I'd make a post giving more details on the type of area I'm specifically looking for.

For those who may not be familiar with Bohemia:
Bohemia is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the east-central part of the Town of Islip, in the southwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Bohemia in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma; on the east by the Hamlet of Holbrook; on the south by the Hamlet of Sayville and the Hamlet of Oakdale; and, on the west by the Hamlet of North Great River and the Hamlet of Central Islip.
The Hamlet of Bohemia has a different border than does the "Bohemia, NY 11716" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Bohemia, NY 11716" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Bohemia and a place can have other than a "Bohemia, NY 11716" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Bohemia): places that have a "Bohemia, NY 11716" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Bohemia are in the Hamlet of Holbrook and the Hamlet of Sayville; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Bohemia with an "Islip Terrace, NY 11752" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

There is a Fairfield apartment complex on Lakeland Ave in Bohemia. The units are updated and the tenants in the complex take great pride in it. It is located just north of Sunrise Hwy.
There is plenty of shopping along Sunrise Hwy for all of your needs.
Further south of Bohemia is Sayville which has restaurants and bars. Seeing as I am not single, I can't really comment too much on what exactly to expect there.
As for parks for flying RC planes....you could try one of these websites and inquire:
Bob's rc model airplanes, www.rcflying.com, r/c model airplanes
Long Island Flying Eagles

Try sayville, Oakdale, even Patchogue for apartments. Heatherwood has a few complexes as does Fairfield.
Its a nice area.

I agree with Bee and Dorothy. Heatherwood and Fairfield are nicely kept complexes.

thats for your suggestions.
I've been looking at apartmentratings.com Heatherwood and Saddle rock seem to have gotten really good ratings, the others not so nice. A general comment I've seen on several is car break ins and vandalism. Is the area generally pretty safe? The crime stats of the area don't seem very poor.
In general, whats the area like? are there things to do at night? is it more suburban or urban or none of the above?

Bohemia is pretty safe. I dont see any threatening looking people roaming around. The homes are nice and well kept. Plus there's always some piney woods nearby to go for a walk in (I believe there's some trails into Connetquot on the east side by the horse stables).
It's one area I would consider moving to, as its not too remote but close enough to places to "get away from it all".

Definitely suburban. I think it is a very nice, diverse area with good surrounding communities as well. Woodsy areas, as John said. A nice blend.
Car break-ins tend to happen at apartment complexes. It is a hassle, but wouldn't endanger you (NOT that I'm saying it is ok, just not dangerous).

We lived in a heatherwood community for 5 years and it was very safe. Nightlife ; The whole are is pretty surburban. Sayville and Patchogue do have a downtown and Patchogue is up and coming. There is a Heatherwood community in Patchogue which is decent ; dont know if they have a gym or anything, but it is behind the 5th precint and walkable to town. It is about 15 mins to Bohemia.
good luck. all in all Suffolk County isnt huge crime.
