Hauppauge
Hi Everyone,
My husband just got a job on Long Island in Farmingdale, and we're considering moving to Hauppauge with our 2 school age sons. I've done some looking over the web and it seems to be a pretty good place to live, and within our budget for housing. Please pass on any info, good or bad, that you have about Hauppauge in particular. Thanks!

For those who may not be familiar with Hauppauge
For those who may not be familiar with Hauppauge:
Hauppauge is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the south part of the Town of Smithtown and partly in the north part of the Town of Islip, in the west part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Hauppauge partly in the Town of Smithtown and partly in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Smithtown and the Hamlet of Nesconset in the Town of Smithtown; on the east by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma and the Village of Islandia in the Town of Islip; on the south by the Village of Islandia and the Hamlet of Central Islip in the Town of Islip; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Commack in the Town of Smithtown.
The Hamlet of Hauppauge has a different border than does the "Hauppauge, NY 11788" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Hauppauge and a place can have other than a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Hauppauge): places that have a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Hauppauge are in the Hamlet of Smithtown and the Village of Islandia; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Hauppauge with a "Smithtown, NY 11787" and "Central Islip, NY 11722" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Bearing in mind that Farmingdale is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the Village of Farmingdale ...
For those who may not be familiar with Farmingdale:
Farmingdale is a village (incorporated in 1904) in the southeast part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east part of Nassau County along the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line and the Nassau/Suffolk County line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Farmingdale in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Old Bethpage; on the east by the Hamlet of East Farmingdale, Town of Babylon, Suffolk County (the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line and the Nassau/Suffolk county line); on the south by the Hamlet of South Farmingdale; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Plainedge and the Hamlet of Bethpage.
Farmingdale is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: places with a "Farmingdale, NY 11735" address that are not in the Village of Farmingdale are in the Hamlet of South Farmingdale and the Hamlet of Plainedge in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau county, with the majority in the Hamlet of East Farmingdale in the Town of Bablyon, Suffolk County.

I'm new here myself. We're renting for a year or so before buying, but Hauppauge is definitely in consideration for us too. I think your housing dollar goes pretty far there, especially considering that the school district is quite well rated (at least according to greatschools dot net where they score a 9 out of 10).
I'll keep an eye on this thread, too, to see what the veterans of the board think.

Hello el,
I live in farmingdale now but graduated from hauppauge high school in 1996. Great area, imo better than commack schools and taxes a hell of a lot cheaper but not quite as good as smithtown schools. My wife and I almost bought our second house in the pines which is the most desirable area of hauppauge schools but passed on it for farmingdale for a few reasons that don't have to do with the area. I know the area extremely well (lived there all through public schools, and my parents still live there. The second best choice in hauppauge schools would be the "bird" section area. If you need any help don't hesitate to ask.

JUst be careful of the part of Hauppauge that you choose. North Hauppauge is a code name for Central Islip in real estate jargon.

Nancy, as the Hamlet of Central Islip is directly south of the Hamlet of Hauppauge, shouldn't this be "South Hauppauge is a code name for Central Islip"?

Yes, sorry.Of course I should have said South Hauppauge. I just would not want anyone to get tricked into buying a home and then finding out that they are not in the Hauppauge school system as they had thought.

RE: Hauppauge
Thank you all for your info about Hauppauge! We're also considering West Babylon, since the schools seem good there, also. Please let me know any info you have about West Babylon, too! Thanks!
