LI's geography is a little too complex for its own good. People use the word township for clarity from the conventional use of the word "town", which implies something a lot smaller than the Towns in New York, even if they know they're not called townships officially.

Walter,
The thing is, no matter what the topic of a particular thread is, if someone mentions the name of a town, you jump right in with "for those not familiar with....." and have to post a map outlining the town and a bio of the town. I, for one, skip right over them because I'm not interested in it and it contributes nothing to the topic at hand. I'm sure you mean well, but I don't think many people here are interested in seeing a huge map and a bio every time they open a thread. Just like this story..... someone was KILLED and you're worried because Newsday misnamed the town or whatever it is. WHO CARES????? I'm sure the dead person's family doesn't care if he died in Westbury, Roslyn, or Mars... it doesn't make him any less dead or any more alive just because a location wasn't named correctly.
Regarding local government and local taxation??? I don't think I need to know where "Old Westbury" ends and where "Roslyn" begins in order to know anything about the taxes I'm paying and the part local government plays in our town/county.

I placed a call to Newsday when they had "Mellville" (sic) on a map of LI in their center spread about 5 years ago.

For those who may not be familiar with Melville:
Melville is located within the valley of shadows and sheep’s blood. There are ancient wizards hiding in the caves to the north along with the dragons which they tame. To the west is a place where they pretend it’s not this year but like 200 years ago. There’s some crappy mall nearby too, but they make up for it by having an Apple store…oh, and Wyandanch is to the south.
All of the countryman and nobleman of the town of Huntington gather in the town square to sell off the week’s crops.
Melville is another one of those towns where they didn’t feel like making the zip code and all that crap match the boundaries. I don’t know the zip code. Look it up on Google or lookup Melville on Wikipedia where all of this information is there for your viewing pleasure.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island
Here is also a picture of a kitty.

Breathrhetoric is very funny good job.
At the same time Walter is a great informative guy and I hope its out of love.
Walter's orginal comment about the tree killing someone reminds me of the classic episode of Seinfeld. George and Susan were watching her father's cabin burn down and George commented "you didn't give me back the change from the toll booth"

George commented "you didn't give me back the change from the toll booth"
George Costansa ..... as old as that show is, people never gert tired of George-jokes.
At the Fancy Food Festival the other day, I heard a least three people comment about the "double-dipping" episode.
I wonder why that is.
