Stop destruction of L.I. nature!
LI has some of the most beautiful beaches in the nation, but they will be ruined if we do not pressure officials to manage them and we do not assert ourselves and protect them!
If you are not rich and don't have your own private beach (another way that the nature is hogged and ruined), you, like us, depend on the parks for recreation. Don't let them get TRASHED!
1) If you see it, stop people from urinating all over the beach. Robert Moses has people crawling all over the dunes and using it as a toilet. It is wrong... and disgusting. Last wkend, we saw a woman dig a trench for herself to use as a bathroom, then we counted five men pissing in the surf within 2 hrs. There are several toilets to use - there is no excuse for this kind of moronic behavior. & it's a health hazard: If someone has Hepatitis a,b,c or a variety of other diseases, you can catch it by coming into contact.
2) When a sign says do not walk over the dune, it says it for a reason. This destroys the dunes and creates fatal erosion. When you see people violating these rules, say something! The beaches belong to everyone, the beach is yours, too, and this should be treated as your own back yard (in a good way, I mean).
3) Bluff destruction:
Yesterday we checked out a state park on the North shore. Signs all over the dune said "stay off - bluff collapsing". Apparently this meant "hey, guys, climb up and urinate" in another language, as the dune was covered with men walking up and down the dune for outhouse purposes. We said something to one of them, but not one spoke English. (It was about 200 migrant workers and 2 of us, btw) But it was worth it to make our anger known. If people think no one cares, it will be anarchy (more than it already is.)
4) BUG YOUR REPS!
email, EMAIL, EMAIL and CALL your reps to demand that they protect our natural wonders and tell them to take it seriously and to use their bloated budget to get patrols out on the beaches. The coast guard on Robert Moses is often kicking back in their offices, when they should be out working. If they are in the office, alert the patrols -- they usually will speed in their SUVs to nab the offenders.
The park offices need to get interns and students out with walkies talkies.
Fines need to be increased.
TAKE ACTION AND make noise and make your voices heard.

You have my complete support. I too am upset at how LI's environment is getting trashed. From clear cutting of pine barrens to litter at the roadside and our beaches.
I had no idea Robert Moses is now getting the riff raff too. Jones Beach has been ruined by it. Jones Beach is more like a city beach, lots of garbage, gangs, and rude ppl. Just a couple of weeks ago there was a shooting there.
When there's restrooms available, people who are urinating or defacting in the dunes need to be reported to the park police.
What has made LI great is it's availability of great parks and beaches, if we lose that, we have nothing to be proud of. LI's economy is it's environment...

But we humans have restrooms available there. The only situation where one has to take care of a bodily function outside of a restroom is when hiking in an undeveloped preserve where there are no restrooms. But at Robert Moses State Park, a restroom is a short walk away.
Being that I do hike through preserves at times I have no choice but to go, and that's because the nearest restroom is over an hour or 3 miles away!

actually he made a good point. anyway, sewage is dumped into waterways, pissing in the surf is the least of the ocean's problems.
