nassau county v/s bergen
Hi Everyone,
I want to get some help in making a decision choosing between
North Jersey(bergen county) and Nassau county in Longisland. Having stayed
for the last 2 years in Essex and Bergen county and previously in Suffolk county in LI for 3 years, I really dont see much difference in terms of cost of living ,BTW I never owned a house ,stayed in apartments in both the places.
Now I am looking to buy a house in a good SD have a 3 year old now and I can find work both in NJ and in the NY , Help and personal experiences especially welcome. I appreciate your opinion,Thanks

Haven't been up to Bergen in ages, I used to go to Paramus alot. Seemed like a nice area to me. No direct train to the city though, but there are plenty of NJT Buses.
But I still prefer Long Island, because there's much larger parks and beaches (Bergen county has no beaches unless you consider the Hudson river a beach).
As much as I hate to say it I think Nassau is better than Bergen. I think spending anytime on a hot summer's day in Bergen where there's no ocean influence is enough to make on want to return to Nassau!
Bergen may have better shopping, but also dont forget about the blue laws....most stores closed on Sunday.
As far as safety goes, Bergen has some problems although not as many problem areas as Nassau, I think that the main area of problems is Hackensack, again haven't been there in years so that may have changed.
The main area in Northern NJ to stay out of is Paterson. From what I hear it makes Hempstead look nice.

I live in Bergen County, NJ and the thing I like it here is the big shopping malls, no hurricanes (which could occur on Long Island). But, we don't have beaches as Long Island does, we have to drive an hour for a beach. Although Bergen County is a rich county.

I think I'll take the Long Island weather over Northern NJ. It gets much hotter up there...brutal in summer. There's no cooling ocean breeze in the afternoon. It could be around 80 on many parts of LI in the afternoon, but in Bergen county it could be in the low 90s.
A hurricane can bring flooding torrential rains inland...and there are many flood spots in Bergen county. And there's much more severe thunderstorms there too (away from the moderating effects of the ocean).
I'm sure Bergen is a great place to live, but I wouldn't want to live there. It's a totally different climate than what I'm used to.
No pine barrens there either...and that's a deal breaker for me.
