I take the Port Wash. line. I actually love my daily commute, express train in less than 30 min, with only 2 stops to Penn. It only gotten better when they changed to every 30 min sched on the weekend schedule.

I'd say the Port Washington line isn't the best because it doesn't stop at Jamaica... I'm planning on going to Brooklyn College... but I would have no way to transfer to a Flatbush Ave-bound train! I mean, for people who only take public transportation to the city, it's great, but for people who don't drive and use public transportation to get everywhere, it sucks. And as much as the Mets want to promote "taking the train to the game", it's never going to fly because it doesn't branch southward toward the denser parts of Nassau.

That's why I like living near the main line. If I lived in say Great Neck it'd be impossible to travel out east, or pretty difficult, as the north-south bus service is bad and doesn't connect up with the trains at all.
I'd have to go all the way to Woodside, much more time consuming and costly. Most people just use the LIRR to commute to Manhattan, so that isn't a factor for them. But for me, I have to be near the main line or the Babylon/Montauk, otherwise I'd never be able to get out east to the pine barrens!

The syosset train station parking lot is filled up by 7:30 am (which he makes) He says that the train is packed and at full capacity and lots of people have to stand. He also complains that the LIRR is cutting back and puts very little air conditioning on---he mostly takes the express trains to Penn but on the occasion he has to stop in Jamaica which he hates. The port washington line is clearly the best line.
I've been on the Babylon Branch and on the Huntington Line.
Personally, I prefer the Huntington Line because the "Express" stops at fewer stations than Babylon ever did.

As far as Port Washington is concerned, it's a commuter's dream Line, exactly because there's no Jamaica. It actually has an impact on RE prices...

As far as Woodbury is concerned, for two decades, I commuted from Cold Spring Harbor (love that station!) and remember it being the last stop where you could safely count on a seat. It is a higher zone, so more expensive, but it might be worthwhile to leave from there instead of Syosset... However, parking lots fill up quickly (everywhere )

Danielle Westbury is on a distinguished road
My fiancee and I took an early morning train this morning because we had somewhere to go out east and thought it would be quicker and easier to take the train than the car.
We left Westbury at 530am this morning and as we are waiting for our train to come
the westbound train came first and I couldnt believe all the people I saw on that train. It looked full at 530am!! Now our train going east bound there was almost noone on it. I also couldnt believe how cheap it was to take the train. The train saved us on gas and it was so much easier taking the train. I also thought it was fun taking the train.

That was the 5:38am train going east. It's usually empty, but later on in the morning, the 8:21am eastbound train is packed, barely anywhere to stand, because of a 2 hour gap in service (after the 6:34am eastbound train the next train is at 8:21am).

sean times 4, that can not be correct. Are these the times to get into Penn? Jamaica ? 34 minutes for Brightwaters? 29 for Setauket ? A half an hour from Captree ? Six minutes from the Shinnecock Reservation ? I'll bet it's closer to six hours round-trip for that one.

I wonder where these figures came from , or maybe I have just misinterpreted them.

Nancy, I think that's overall average commute time, not just public transit users. When I looked at the census data before, they didn't split commute time down by mode of transport.
