Abandoned Kitten (rant)
Hi everyone,
I know this isn't typically the place for topics like this, but I have to post about it......
Yesterday, on my way home driving through Queens, I rescued an abandoned kitten from the side of Jamaica Avenue (which is a very busy street/almost like a highway).... I was driving and saw something. At first, I thought it was a bag or a bunch of leaves. As I got closer, I realized it was an animal and thought it was a squirrel... then I saw it was a tiny kitten.
I swerved my car over and pulled to the side of the road. I got out and ran to where the kitten was. The poor thing was terrified and ran under a parked car to hide. I got on the ground, went under the car and got her.
I took her home, cleaned her up and realized she's only about 3 or 4 weeks old! She shouldn't even be separated from the mother cat at this point, so I'm sure some creep just dumped her there on the side of the road. I just grabbed her and got back to my car before getting myself killed!
She's been eating great since last night... the poor thing was starving! Her eyes are somehwat open, but she has a cold so they're no completely open. She's also very wobbly when walking.... I don't know if it's because she's a kitten or because she's got a hurt back leg.
I sent out a lot of e-mails, went to various shelter sites, etc because I can't keep her. I have four cats as it is and I'm in the process of having to move from where I am and don't have a new place lined up yet. Thankfully, someone from "Little Shelter" in Huntington is willing to foster her. I'm so happy she's going to have a happy home and get the love/care she deserves. I'm sad because I would have loved to keep her but, given my overall situation, I can't.
Now, to my rant...... Why oh why do people do things like this to poor defenseless aniimals???? ?Why are people so freaking cruel???? Ironically enough, when I found her, we were on our way home from "Broadway Barks" in Manhattan which is a yearly event for the adoption of both cats and dogs and raises money to help abused, neglected, and abandoned animals......

I commend you on your efforts to rescue this animal. I had a neighbor growing up that saw a car throw a strange looking bag out of the window on the Belt Parkway one evening. Don't ask me why he thought to stop but he stopped and sure as anything there was a kitten inside. The Little Shelter will do the right thing. I am glad you were able to get the kitten to the right type of place. I find myself more sympathetic to animals and the things that happen to them than to people most of the time. Sometimes I think there is something wrong with me for feeling that way.
To answer your question, why do people do these things? Because they are A-holes thats why.
All of my animals, my neighbors animals, friends, family, etc have been rescued by myself and/or my fiancee. One story is worse than the next. Probably one fo the worst--My parents have a cat that I gave to them--a friend's husband caught a bunch of kids preparing to throw the kitten off the top of a building in Brooklyn somewhere....for no reason other than to do it.
People that do these things have no redeeming social value whatsoever.

About 17 years ago we were working at night at our office in Bohemia.. Suddenly someone drove up, placed a brown box on the doorstop and drove away.
Inside the box was a mamma cat and about 7-8 kittens. As it was 9pm, we put them in the bathroom, gave them water/milk and hoped for the best. The next day I drove with the kittens to the North Shore Animal League ; well honestly, they were so rude. The obviously thought it was my box of kittens (two of them were flea infested and on the way to a better place). They denied all of them and so I drive back to the animal shelter in Islip. Again, I was given such an attitude. They were not my kittens ; actually I really do not like cats, but as a human being, I have a duty to get them taken care of. Well the Islip shelter took them and advised me that ; you know what we will do with them. Yes, i do know ; they probably put them down ; at least in a humane way.
Not like the coward who dumped them on our doorstep.
I also commend you for trying to rescue the kitten.

I just got back from Little Shelter. They are amazing!! They have a whole "cattery" with all sorts of beautiful cats (surprisingly, there were only a few kittens). The took my Little Angel and realized she was dehydrated (I mixed water with the food because she wouldn't drink water or kitten formula, but I guess it wasn't enough). Also, she has a cold (she was sneezing and her eyes were messy). They're going to have a vet look at her, give her antibiotic and probably IV fluids and a great woman is going to foster her until she's healthy enough to be around the other kitties. Oh, and it turns out they think she's about 5 - 5 1/2 weeks, not 3 or 4 like I originally thought.
She is such a sweet kitty and I'm so happy she's going to be taken care of so well.
Samrai, I think it's great that you rescue animals. I feel the same way as you.... I feel more for the innocent animals who are maltreated, abused, neglected and abandoned. I think we feel this way because animal are defenseless and they don't ask for this life. They can't do anything to change their situation.
Dorothy, it's so sad about that mama cat and her kittens. People totally suck. The only consolation is to know that they're over the "rainbow bridge" and in a much better place than they would have been here.

We were considering making donations to various places in lieu of wedding favors for guests when we get married this fall. Little Shelter was on the list.

Unfortunately i've seen this alot and you definitely did the right thing, thank you. I'm very familiar with this though considering I currently have 8 adult cats and previously our count was 10 a few years back. One of my cats was rescued by us by an on ramp to sunrise hwy,2 from parks, and a few strays that we took care of from outside then cleaned up,brought to vet then they came home and inside.I've seen where people try to breed for certain combinations and colors and if they don't get what they want they dump them---disgusting!!! Helpless, innocent animals being left to die; i'll never understand how anyone could ever do it. We're supposed to be human beings but what does it say if an individual can be so inhumane. Fortunately you hear something like this and thankfully you were there to help and should be commended. I've been Little Shelter and it is a good facility, also in Manorville (just north of the LIE) is Kent which is another very good facility(no kill shelter) with a separate enclosed cat area.
Well the kitten won't say it with words so I will---thanks for being there and realize that something good happens when you do something good for others unselfishly.

There are so many great shelters out there and so many rescue organizations. Yesterday, at Broadway Barks, there were a lot of organizations that help animals. Two that I remember are Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) from out east and "Rescue Ink" (an awesome group of big, burley, bikers who love animals and rescue them. They were presented with an award yesterday at the event.
RescueInk.org is their site.

That is such a nice thing that you did. I know many shelters do not take in small kittens that young so I commend you and that shelter for helping out.
My parents have a 13 year old cat that they rescued at 1 day old and nursed to health through infancy. No shelter would take a newborn, abandoned kitten. It was the best thing for us that we kept and raised the cat. It also taught my brother and I a valuable lesson of kindness to animals.
There should be more people like you in this world !!!!
