Default Inground pool and homeowners insurance

Does anyone know if there is a significant different in homeowners insurance, if an inground pool is present?

We did check into that. Our agent said that as long as the pool itself is fenced, AND the gate in that fence has a lock, we wouldn't be charged more.

I asked her if it really makes any difference because after all those fences are only 3 or 4 feet high and any determined child or person can easily climb over if the gate is locked. She said it's the LOCK that is the important thing because if the gate was locked, the person was legally trespassing and the insurance company isn't liable for injury or death to a person who is trespassing. If the gate didn't have a lock, then it's the homeowner's liability for failing to secure the pool LEGALLY against trespassers, and the insurance company could get stuck paying the claim. No fence/no lock = higher premiums. Fence & lock = no extra cost, because the ins company knows they won't have to pay.

Guess it's all in the fine print.

Oh, I should have mentioned that our insurance is with Liberty Mutual, and so of course if you have a different company, YMMV (as the saying goes )
