Default Newbie seeking advice

Hi!
I will soon be a single Mom & moving to LI. I am looking for advice on which towns I should consider. I'm a little nervous to be living on my own with a small child. I need someplace where I can feel safe. I was thinking Suffolk but I will take any advice you have. TIA

What you can realistically afford for rent will play an important part in selecting a town...

In decent areas, if you want a 2BR apt, you're going to be paying a pretty penny.... Upwards of $1400. In desirable areas, you'll be paying $1800 or more. For buildings ("luxury"), you'll be paying 2K. I've been looking myself and can't find anything affordable.

Where in Suffolk were you considering? From experience, I can tell you stay away from Wyandanch! North Amityville is just like Wyandanch.....

There are also a lot of things to consider... is the apartment legal? is it in a 2family house and, if so, would you be able to get along with the other tenants? What about the neighborhood? Is it convenient to stores, etc?

Let us know what your price range is and what you're looking for in a neighborhood and we can give you better answers. Also, you should start picking up the Sunday Newsday and look at the ads in there for apartment rentals.

I'm not sure excatly right now, it depends on how much support I will get. Right now I would say around 1400. Possibly a little more.

Right now there are approximately 158 rentals in nassau and suffolk for $1,400 and under that have 2 bedrooms. If you wanted a pet friendly rental....the choice would have gone down to 27 rentals between the two counties.

Please keep in mind that the rent in many apartments does NOT include utilities - that would have an additional impact on what you can afford...

Are you speaking of the complexes? I was looking at them on apartments.com. They all seem nice but I'm not sure which towns to zero in on. I even looked on the apartment rating site but it wasn't much help. Any thoughts on complexes to look into? Thank you all so much. I'm nervous & scared so I really appreciate all the advice.

Where are you going to be working? Do you have a vehicle? Both of these are very important to consider. Also, do you want to be closer to NYC? Are you familiar with Long Island (since you say you're moving "to" LI)?

There is a lot to consider and think about. Long Island is a big place and a few miles can make a world of difference in what you want.
