Moving to the US of A - Long Island (New York: relocating, apartment)

Hi,
My family and I would be moving to US sometime by Sept end/mid Oct. As if relocating isnt stressful enough , we had to go ahead and move to a different country altogether.Incase you are wondering,my husband's work brings us here.
I have been browsing this forum a( must say - an amazing job and a lifesaver) and understand that Long Island is like the suburbs of the New York City region. We are looking to rent an apt ( 2br-2 ba)/condo/townhouse in a family-friendly safe (with no / very verylow instances of crime) neighbourhood.We are looking for places in the range of $1800-$2200/- month and a maximum of 30-40 minute commute.My husband's office is in Port Washington. I should feel safe taking my daughter out for her evening stroll and not get too worried if it gets a bit dark while returning home( is that possible at all)I need to know what are the good/desirable neighbourhoods in Long Island and what are the areas we need to avoid.What are the zipcodes that we should look into? We are looking for a 1-year lease.Is it possible to get a good deal on an apt/condo/townhome if its listed by owner.Any website which has these listings??
My daughter would be 3 months old when we relocate. I would like some recommendations on good pediatricians. The one she has now is excellent and I want to continue with a very good doc.

Anyone, any inputs on the desirable neighbourhoods in Long Island?? We really need to start searching for a place to stay. We would really appreciate all the inputs we can get.

Port Washington is a very nice little town - if your husband works there, why not live there too? It's an upscale community, close to the water, etc.; I just checked and found 10 possibilities which are available right now that might fit your requirements, they all have at least 2 BR and at least 1.5 Ba.

Also, since Long Island is indeed a "LONG" island, maybe finding a pediatrician might be best after you found an apartment? (Not to take away from Danielle's referral!!). All depends on how long you want to travel to get there, just food for thought ;-)

Don't know where you're moving from, but well remember when I came to this country... Took me some time to adjust LOL But now I love it, and Long Island is the best!!!

We currently have no clue about the geography of Long Island.I have googled maps of Long Island and we are constantly going over them( but we are still clueless about where to stay). We are open to staying in any location and neighbourhood as long as its family-friendly and SAFE!!! And an upscale safe neighbourhood like Port Washington is exactly something we are looking for.

What are the desirable zipcodes of Port Washington and what are the areas we need to avoid? What are the other places around Port Washington that we could look into? What are the websites where we could search for rentals?

We are moving from Europe ( UK to be more precise).

A good website would be MLSLI.com (acronym for Multiple Listing Service of Long Island); they only just recently included rentals, so you're lucky
