Default Granite Kitchen Countertops

We're remodeling our kitchen and have decided on granite for the countertops. The particular granite is Black Galaxy. We've gotten a quote from a store in Queens for $65/sq ft. I was amazed that the Home Depot Design Center asks $92/sq ft. for the same material.

Anyone have any favorite granite suppliers in Nassau?

Careful, I think CBS news had a story last week on elevated radiation levels many times the accepted norm eminated from grantite counter-tops...particularly with lighter-colored granite...

The potential amount of radon gas and radiation in granite countertops is minimal. Many building materials (as well as food!) contain radiation and radon.

AGC Stoneworks in Babylon did my kitchen and they did a great job with everything from templating to install. Very professional.

As far as price... sometimes you get what you pay for... also, to note get the job quoted bring a drawing with measurements of the cabinets etc. Sqft price is not the be all and end all, for one, I've seen 2 different sqft amounts for my kitchen, people look at sqft differnently.

Edge option pricing can vary significantly. Some charge a low price per sqft, but then charge high prices for each corner, turn and cut in, hole, undermount sink.

Personally I LOVE soapstone. Easy to maintain and in some cases it's even less expensive than granite. Matter of taste I spose'. Just thought I'd mention it b/c some people don't really even think about this choice. You can put boiling hot pots on it and you can easily sand out any scratches.

It is true too that you get what you pay for most of the time. For instance I know HD carries Craftmaid kitchen cabs as do Mom and Pop shops....the carcasses(the cabinet cases behind ther doors) are "thinner" then what you get from a Mom and Pop shop but no one's gonna tell you that. Home Depot it's 5/8" and the Mom and Pop Shop is 3/4". Might not matter to some people but then again it might so...

Soapstone is awesome; there are a few homes in which I've seen it and loved it. I would like to use it when I am able to redo the kitchen in my vacation home.

It's good of you to inform people about the HD 'quality' vs the Mom and Pop cabs. Too many people look at the pretty doors and trim but don't give as much consideration to the bones of the product.
