Best towns on Long Island for an interracial family?
My husband is from Eastern Europe and my family is from Haiti. I was born in N.Y. We are middle class. I am a pharmacist and my husband is a pilot. We prefer a town in Nassau county, with good schools and safe. We're thinking of Elmont, most of my family lives there, but I'm not sure of the school district.

Elmont has two different high schools. One is Elmont Memorial and the other is Sewanhaka. Sewanahka is the better of the two schools. Make sure that you know which area of Elmont has which district. Also check out the school report cards online.

Elmont isn't all that great of a town.
I think areas like Massapequa, Bethpage, Merrick are a lot better with much better schools. And, with your husband being a pilot & you being a pharmacist, you can afford even nicer areas like Great Neck, Manhasset, or any of the other beautiful North Shore communities.

From the title of your post, you are concerned about where an interacial family might or might not be accepted. I wouldn't worry about it too much. On Long Island there is more economic prejudice then racial prejudice. In most places, if you can afford to buy, you will be welcomed.

Very well put Tom. I think any neighborhood would be welcoming too. The islands demographics are becoming more and more diverse on a regulary basis.

Elmont isn't that safe. Valley Stream is a very ethnically diverse area with a good school district. Valley Stream prices are also middle class. East Meadow is another area that is diverse, schools are good, there is a main street with a lot business and a huge park with pool, golf course, gym, fitness track, concert hall, soccer and baseball field with plenty of open space. East Meadow is near Islanders stadium and is also middle class and safe. These areas are also both very close to Elmont (where most of your family is).

With your income, move where ever you want to move to. Want to be accepted? Be a good neighbor. That's all that's needed.

Perfectly said!!! I don't care what race, creed, nationality, or religion of my neighbors are.... so long as they're decent, respectful, courteous, etc, they're alright with me!
