Default Southern born children transplanted to LI?

Has anyone here relocated to LI with children that were born in the south (North Carolina and below)? I was born and raised on LI, moved to Birmingham 14 years ago and married an Alabama girl, and now have 3 children ages 10, 7, 5 that were born down here. I was curious how other "southern" kids fared with the transition.

I am not concerned about my 5 year old daughter; with her bright blue eyes, blond hair, and southern belle accent, she is sure to drive the boys crazy!

I have never heard a southern accent on LI... it's kind of unprecedented, against the current of most migration.

I believe it depends upon where you move to. I live in an area which has a number of people who relocate here from around the US and the world. There are MANY accents.
Most people in the community are well educated and the children don't really seem phased by it.

As for your little one's southern accent: my friends, both born and raised in England, had children here. While in Mum's care, they had British accents that were mildly diluted. Once they were in school full time, their accents gave way to a more Americanized English. Speaking with any of them today, you would never know that they ever had an English accent until the use some British idiom. Your little Southern Belle might retain the gentility of her southern breeding, but might lose her accent.

Your children's transition should be easier because one of their parents, you, were a LI'er.

They should enjoy real Italian and real Delicatessen food, as well as meeting with and interacting with these two ethnic groups, as well as other ethnic groups, that are not that well represented where they had been living.

We just relocated here with our 9 yr old boy raised in South Carolina. My husband is from Boston and I was raised in Georgia(although I have lived in England, Ca and TX in my adult life), so he doesn't have much of a southern accent. No accent at all really. We are anxious to how he will interact with the kids here and vice versa. He makes friends easily so we think he will be fine. He is transitioning from a small Catholic School to public here. What part of the island are you moving to? We are in in Kings Park near Smithtown.
