Mineola/Carle Place question (Glen Cove, Hyde Park: upkeep, apartment complex, rental)

I am considering a couple of apartments in the Mineola area and wanted to get some feedback from people who know the place. This is the Fairhaven Apartments in Mineola (Old Country Road - near Glen Cove) and the same ones in Carle Place (Jericho Tpke and Glen Cove Rd).

I wanted to know about both the areas and which one to go with, if those were the only choices. Anyone who lives around there or know about the places - some info about the safety of the areas would help immensly!

A little confused...not aware of any apartments near Glen Cove & Old country Rd...I think you mean Glen Cove and Jericho Tpke. Also, I'm not sure that Carle Place borders Jericho Tpke & Glen Cove. Walter could help out but, that corner borders Village of Westbury, Village of Old Westbury, and Mineola.

I can't speak to the apartments, but the area is nice...maybe a bit busy because of traffic on Jericho Tpke, Glen Cove Rd, & the Northern State Pkwy.

Well, this apartment complex in Mineola is at 400 E. Old Country Rd (between Mineola Blvd and Glen Cove Rd)....the other one in Carle Place is 401 E Jericho Turnpike (E. Jericho Tpke and Glen Cove Rd/Northern Pkwy)...
I am not so much worried about the traffic...but safety (gang activities or anything of that sort)...

You will be fine. Some of the "gang-activity" talk on these forums will have you think folks live in South Central...LOL! Your biggest quality of life issue will be the traffic. And yes, there is a small section of Carle Place just west of Jericho Tpke. Then again this is still the real world not Mary Poppins'...bottom-line, it's a safe but busy area.

Okay, so at a high level, it should be alright? I still fear the condition of the apartments/parking, but as far as the area is concerned...I hope it is not really unsafe to go out on foot in the evenings.

Also, is the traffic situation at both these sports really bad? I will have to commute to Lake Success every day, which is no more than 5 miles, so I am hoping it should take more than 15-30 mins, even with traffic!

The traffic there is not so bad I would consider not moving there if I found a place I liked. It is just bad enough to be annoying at times.

You will be able to make it to work in that time frame. Maybe a little less once you learn the back roads.

I know the Fairhaven apts you mentioned on Jericho tpke. I always wondered myself if they were nice inside. They do not look that bad from the outside but who knows. IMO, the area does have more traffic than I would prefer to live around but thats mostly midday so you probably won't be home anyway...but I think your commute to Lake Success would be a piece of cake....the time of your commute will be the most important key...you can leave ten minutes earlier or later in and around these areas and its amazing how different of a commute it could be regarding traffic, congestion, etc. Just avoid Jericho tpke as your main artery to commute east and west. For some reason, I find it ALWAYS takes longer as opposed to other east-west roads along my route. My fiancee does the reverse commute--very close to Lake Success Area to Mineola (right down the road from Fairhaven apts).


As for safety, its fine. You can walk around all you want--just be careful crossing Jericho tpke..thats the only safety issue I see. By the way, across the street in the CVS shopping center....Wing Wong kitchen....good chinese...also a bagel place...Bagel man....pretty good as well.

It is good to know that the areas are not dangerous. I just am not sure about crime in these areas, so just want to make sure we don't end up going to the wrong spots. But then, finding an apartment rental in that area seems to be almost impossible to me!
I have been looking for something in Hew Hyde Park, Mineola, Great Neck etc for a couple of weeks now, but just a handful of apartments that fit the bill! It looks like these places have more houses than anything else!

I lived in the Carle Place Fairhaven for 5 years. Never had any problems with crime or anything like that. The apartments are in good condition. Some have been updated more than others (newer kitchens, dishwashers) so you just have to see what they have available. They are by no means new but they seem to do a pretty good job with upkeep and maintenance was always quick to fix any problems that came up.

It's a great location with the Meadowbrook, Northern State, and LIE nearby. The mall is just around the corner and it's also very close to the Mineola train station (although looks like you won't be commuting to the city, but if you ever need the train there are a ton out of that station).

The ones on Jericho Turnpike just seem to have a better feel about them than the ones on Old Country Rd. It's hard to put a finger on it, but it's the sense I get when I drive through them. I've been through both a few times, since I've got a family member in one, and a friend of my daughter in another. I've never heard anything about crime in either.
