What are you looking for? The High School is okay but not great. Patchogue is the nearest large village. A lot of restaurants have opened up there in recent years and it has a nice play house. You can take a ferry that departs from Patchogue and go to the ocean beaches at Fire Island in about a half hour or you can take a 20 minute drive to Smith Point. Sayville, Bellport, Port Jefferson and Stony Brook are nice villages that are also fairly close (15-20 minutes). Just a bit to your east is the 1300 acre Southhaven Park, a nice wooded area with areas for picnicing, row boating and other outdoor activities.

Thanks I know the longwood schools are ok & that is a concern as my daughter will be going into kindergaten. I want to know that is a safe area since I assume we'd be there for at least a few years.

I live in the Longwood School district ( in Ridge) the area of Medford that attends Longwood is not my favorite, some of it borders Gordon Heights. I like the part of Medford that is in Patchogue-Medford better. JMO

Map of registered offenders in your neighborhood

Look for the house the street is on using the above website to see if you have any sex offenders to worry about nearby.

Bee-great suggestion! I looked on it myself. Is Medford known for sex offenders?

Nah, Gordon Heights is, which just shares a zip code with Medford. Medford is probably one of my favorite central suffolk areas, especially the pines.

I live in Medford and our school are is Longwood. Our fire district is Gordon Heights ; watch out for huge fire taxes BUT we are all trying to get them down with public knowledge and petitions etc. Its been a battle for years and now we are getting closer and closer.

But the area here is really lovely. Its very country, quiet. Our elementry school is Charles E Walters and all the kid go on to middle and high school in Longwood. You always have the option of sending the child to private.

dm me if you have any questions. i love it here and will love it more when our taxes go DOWN.

When I lived in Patchogue I would recieve a "sexual predator alert" in my mailbox about every 3 weeks. It freaked my out to say the least. But I believe with Meghans Law a letter has to be sent out every time a registered offender moves into the school district. Very sad and scary!
