Garden City or Manhasset?
My husband and I are thinking of moving to Long Island and are considering Garden City and Manhasset? Do you favor one town over the other? Any particular reason why? How are the school districts? Commute to NYC? Thanks so much!

Both are really great places to live and would love to live in both. My Dad grew up in Manhasset and loved it.
If I had to pick, I would say Garden City but that is just becuase I when to HS nearby and alot of GC guys went there too. Most of them grew up in awesome houses in GC and I was impressed as a teenager.
Manhasset is more "North shore" with all that trappings and is surrounded by nicer towns.
Good luck, you be happy with both!

For those who may not be familiar with Garden City
For those who may not be familiar with Garden City:
Garden City is a village (incorporated in 1919) in the north-center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the center of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Village of Mineola and the Hamlet of Carle Place, all in the Town of North Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of East Garden City; on the south by the Village of Hempstead, the Hamlet of West Hempstead, the Hamlet of Garden City South and the Hamlet of Franklin Square; and, on the west by the Village of Stewart Manor and the Village of New Hyde Park.
Garden City is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: places that have a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address that are not in the Village of Garden City are in the Hamlet of East Garden City, the Hamlet of Garden City South, the Hamlet of Franklin Square and the Village of Stewart Manor; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Garden City that have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address.
The Nassau County county seat is in that part of the Village of Garden City that has a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

For those who may not be familiar with Manhasset
For those who may not be familiar with Manhasset:
Manhasset is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of North Hempstead in the northwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Manhasset in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Plandome Heights, the Village of Flower Hill and the Village of Munsey Park; on the east by the Village of Roslyn Estates; on the south by the Village of North Hills; and, on the west by the Village of Lake Success, the Village of Thomaston, the Village of Kensington and the Village of Great Neck.
Manhasset is one of those villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of places with the community name in their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have a "Manhasset, NY 11030" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Manhasset are in the Village of Plandome Manor, the Village of Plandome, the Village of Plandome Heights, the Village of Munsey Park, the Village of Flower Hill, the Village of North Hills and the Village of Thomaston.

Garden City and Manhasset are both really nice places, The commute to NYC in Manhasset is slightly better, Manhasset schools are also a little bit better, prices in Manhasset are higher. Also, I haven't been to Manhasset in a while, but Garden City has more things to do. In the end, it depends on the things that are most important to you.

Manhasset is still outrageously overpriced (as far as list prices go).

I know both the towns all to well having lived in GC for my entire life, and other family members living in Manhasset. Similar towns but at the same time, both extremely different. For the money, GC is tops. There's really only one area in GC that you could get a decent plot of land larger than a 60x100, and for that you'll pay. The downtown area is quaint and people who live in the town take pride in the town. The entire town is spotless. Manhasset has a much larger downtown and depending on where you live, will have to cross a major road to get there. The layout of the town is less grid like (GC is like that) with winding roads. If you don't know where you're going, you will get lost for a bit. The downtown and surrounding area is not kept up the way GC is. Driving traffic is a huge problem in Manhasset. A huge possitive note on commuters is that GC has two LIRR lines going through the town with 6 stations. The founder of GC (Alexander T. Stewart) planned the community properly. All the stations have enough spaces for the commuters but they're not large parking lots and there's nice gardens with mature trees that make them nice. The commute to NYC is a tad longer than Manhasset but the Manhasset line is a low line and the trains are delayed more frequently due to heavy rain and snowfall. If given the choice, I'd prefer GC since it has more positives. If you want larger property and the items mentioned above are not an issue, I'd go with Manhasset. Good luck.

A primary reason why Garden City is better organized and maintained than is Manhasset is that Garden City is a village (municipal corporation) and governs itself through an elected mayor and Board of Trustees, who all live in the Village of Garden City; while Manhasset is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) that is governed at-large by the Town of North Hempstead through a Town Supervisor and Town Board, none of whom may live in the Hamlet of Manhasset.

I'd take Manhasset over Garden City anyday.
I just think it's lovely, lots and various businesses, and I like the people vibe better too.

Me, too. Garden City's borders are way too "iffy" for me. On the other hand, Manhasset is bordered by Great Neck, Port Washington, and Roslyn -- all equally excellent towns.
