The Westwood section is still considred nice. Otherwise, the entire town is undergoing a change. It's still not bad, but it is getting a reputation. I would avoide the Queens border/Green Acres section...it is quite dangerous over there.

For those who may not be familiar with Valley Stream
fitdude7, it depends what you mean by "Valley Stream" because the "Valley Stream, NY 11580 & 11581" ZIP Code postal zone (4,309 acres) is almost twice as large as the Village of Valley Stream (2,258 acres), and includes within its borders the Hamlet of North Valley Stream (1,209 acres) and the Hamlet of South Valley Stream (566 acres).
For those who may not be familiar with Valley Stream:
Valley Stream is a village (incorporated in 1925) in the western part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County, along the Nassau County/New York City (County/Borough of Queens) line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Valley Stream in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Valley Stream; on the east by the Village of Malverne, the Village of Lynbrook and the Hamlet of Hewlett; on the south by the Hamlet of Hewlett, the Hamlet of Woodmere and the Hamlet of South Valley Stream; and, on the west by the Hamlet of South Valley Stream and New York City (County/Borough of Queens).
Valley Stream is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where many places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: most of those places with a "Valley Stream, NY 11580 & 11581" mailing address that are not in the Village of Valley Stream are in the Hamlet of North Valley Stream and the Hamlet of South Valley Stream.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Valley Stream District 13 is the best one out of all the Valley Stream school districts.

if you are set on moving to valley stream, I would try to look in the areas of the westwood section that are closest to the malverne/lynbrook borders, or I would look at the areas in the south part of the town near the Hewlett border, I feel those are two of the better parts. Try to stay away from central ave and its general vicinity, it is a little too queens over there for my liking.
And yes, I have lived there for over 25 years of my life, so I know a little bit about it. and next time you are in town, stop by Ancona Pizza on rockaway ave for some great pizza!
oh, and I also wanted to add that there is a small section in the south part of VS that is zoned for Hewlett schools, which is considered superior to VS schools.
