Four hours of commute every day is insane, IMO....and remember that's only on days where everything goes according to plan. Rocky Point is very nice from what I've seen, definitely unique and best of all CHEAP - but not cheap enough or nice enough to make it worth that commute!!
As far as worries about the school district, yes it is ranked low but I'd chock that up to the high quality of districts on LI more than anything. If I had kids I seriously doubt I'd have any second thoughts about sending them there.
If you're coming from one of NYC's outer boroughs, I question how much you would even notice the difference between an area like Valley Stream and Rocky Point. I remember a long time ago I was walking home from a bar with a friend, on the Wantagh Avenue overpass of the Southern State Parkway and we were pondering what people getting off this exit thought. We lived in that town our whole lives, up until that point we figured - like everyone else says - it was getting to be so much like Queens and the city, overpopulated, people on top of each other, too much traffic, etc. Then we both moved away for a few years and I remember another time coming back home on a road trip....getting off that same exit and thinking "wow, there is NOTHING here at all". It's all about perspective. Suburbs are suburbs, the difference in density between Nassau and eastern Suffolk is miniscule compared to the difference between Elmont and Queens Village - which touch each other. If you drive on the parkways/expressway a lot, I guarantee you can point out the exact millisecond you cross the border from NYC to Nassau and vice-versa....and after that it's just a sea of houses for the next 80 miles or so.....there's just less of them as you go east.

wow, did I really type that? lol...
I must have been a little punchy last night. Or maybe the fumes from all of the car traffic in nassau has turned my brain to mush. Either way, my point remains...EASTERN suffolk is ok....it's just the only way to get to the city from there without spending 20+ a week a commuting is via helicoptor.

I had a feeling thats what you meant.
Were actually the E/W line it just depends on who you ask.
One town North of Middle Island sounds like the Middle to me.
As for the commute....not optimal, but more than doable.

I agree with you Sean regarding the schools.
LI is a really weird animal...they really are either par(aka good) or sub par.
It seems like Nassau has the advantage as well in that area.
If you look at districts by county RP is a bit higher in relation to its peers and VS is a bit lower.
Either way they are both fine schools, its just a matter of where you want to call home.
My in laws who moved here, came from Queens, bought a beautiful house by the beach(for what they wouldve spent on a handyman in Bayside) and are planning to retitre here in 5 years (we actually have quite a few retirees out here). They dont really bemoan the commute since the end is in sight and theyll have much more $$$ left over when they get there.
As far as the line goes, to be perfectly honest with you I cant tell the difference between Bellrose and Floral Park or Little Neck and Great Neck, it is a bit more noticeabale by the Belt though.
Peace
