Possibly Relocating to Long Island - Looking For Info
Greetings,
My fiancee recently received a job offer in Cold Spring Harbor. We are originally from Rockland County, NY (We've been living in Albany, NY for 5 years) so while we're used to the NYC area, we don't know the first thing about Long Island, and if we make the move, we'd like to find a nice area to live in.
We're in our mid 30's and don't have children (with no future plans to have kids) and would like a location that has a nice downtown area (i.e. bars/restaurants/shops).
I'd likely be working in NYC, so convenience to train options is important. Something close to the water would be delightful, but not necessary.
Do any of you kind folks have any recommendations of towns/villages we could look into further?
Ideally, we would like a 2 bedroom apartment, is it unrealistic to hope to pay less than $1500 in rent? This is going to be the biggest change for us, since in Albany we pay less than $800 for our current apartment.
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks so much!

Welcome to CSHL (I assume). Many people who relocate to work there are shocked by the lack of affordable rental stock in the area. Your best bet is Huntington, as it is close by and has the amenities that you are looking for. For a two bedroom, figure about $1500 - $1600 plus utilities.

You can rent a 2 bedroom apartment in someones house (probably illegal), or a run down garden apartment complex for around that much. A nicer, newer complex will be a more than $1500. It sounds like Huntington would be a good place to start looking, as it has electrified rail to NYC and is close to Cold Spring Harbor. Since you don't plan on having kids, school district is not a big deal, so you can live on the borders of slightly sketchier areas around Huntington and now have to worry so much.

You can probably get a 2 bedroom but most likely a 1 bedroom for $1,500 in Huntington Village. As long as you have no pets you will have more choices. Washer & Dryer for that price are rare.
