Default Long Island-Jersey Lite

If it werent for the beaches...Long Island would be the San Fernando Valley with all the fresh north NJ/NYC air...
I truly loathe Long Island. Not for what it was...but what it has become.
Long Island was a great place in the 1940-60's. If you like high taxes from parochial corrupt city leaders that like shifting your income to pay their police and cement executive/"construction"
company friends...by all means move to Long Island. The notion that Long Island has such better school systems is quite the offshoot of NYC area arrogance. Most of the Long Island refugees that I've met up here in Northern CT are like complete fishes out of water...and have found it difficult to adapt to a semi-rural enviornment. Guess that rigidity and unwillingness to adapt is from the superior educational system. They complain about pizza, bagels, snow on the roads, how far it is to a decent eatery. Many moved here for the change of pace...but they never changed. So sad...

You, sir, are vastly superior to all of us lowly Islanders. Thanks be to you, oh great Connecticut savior. By the way, why the hell are you on the NY board reading LI posts when you should be on the CT boards lauding your fine state.

Thank you for gracing us with your online wisdom.

Sounds like you have a complex. BTW..I'm a native NYer (yes..born in NYC). I also spend my summers north of Watertown. I am just pointing out that Long Island has become a complete sham. I'm sorry you take issue with that...but so many young people and many others have seen what lurks ahead across the sound. Stress, strain, traffic, strip malls, high taxes, corruption, Uniondale....

Long Island=Welcome to hell.

Heh, heh.

There is not much I agree with you about, but you do favor the Nassau Hub development, don't you? So do I.

If "NIMBY's" want to use their quality of life as an excuse to not expand the tax base, then they should pay the extra taxes, too.

Will the HUB really change anything? Unless you clean up Hempstead, who will want to go to the area? What about the HUB will encourage tourism? I understand the need to modernize Nassau, but I haven't seen anything that would interest me in visiting and staying over on Long Island. Perhaps hotels closer to or on the beach would be a better draw?

They're all nuts. It's not a NIMBY thing - anyone who has lived in Nassau for more than a year or so knows that he whole project is a scheme of some sort and the pigs just want a shot at a public teat. No one is coming to Nassau to hang out.

If they wanted to do something to improve the quality of life they could work on public transportation. That's about it.

Take a visit, see for yourself. Make your own decision.
We kept up, cashed out and by our own decision, are now turning our NY dollars into even a better future for our children in a growing area. It is congested on LI but the fact remains that the area's population is contracting. More leave than come in. Things are changing for many on LI and for some who are in the right industries ( unionized jobs ) doctors, lawyers and people who have daddy's money, will stay and do fine. For others, it's a great place to launch a life and LEAVE. Not because we can't make it but because we see the writing on the wall for employment possiblilities. It really is not the end all when you begin to see other parts of the country and see the lifestlye you can have in other areas.
PS Most people who stay-stay because family is there and it is such a hard transition to move a family. For those who stay and enjoy LI-I perfectly understand, it is really a nice place to live for some people.

I think the people who relocate and are unhappy about the move are the ones who primarily moved for the lower cost of living. There are so many aspects to look into. You have to think to yourself how you will feel being away from family, being in a totally different environment. Just have to think about it and research it more.

My boyfriend and I want to move to Las Vegas mostly because we love it there. It's a lower cost of living, which is nice, but not one of the main reasons. We can afford to be on Long Island, but just choose to be somewhere different. I'm just kinda tired of Long Island.
