But I honestly don't think most of those reasons for the expense are worth it.

Just to clarify, I'm a NY "alumni"....moved out in 1970. Been a while, but I'm back there all the time.

Long Island has some of the most beautiful early built suburbs (see Saddle Rock or Locust Valley or Glen Cove) in the country (yes...). However...to really "enjoy" Long Island today..you need some loot. My family got out of the Grand Concourse area of the Bronx back in the 30's and moved out to Great Neck when it was pretty much just a middle class 'burb. Basically lots of tight knit families, good schools, safe etc...to them this was America and was paradise.

I go back to LI to visit the relatives a lot. There is a really hard edge that has taken over Long Island. It's not something that is directed at me, but I see it in many aspects (driving, shopping...etc) Lots of really angry people. Maybe its the over-taxed housing to fund the fireman and cops and bloated town governments. Maybe its just the bar being raised and the finances arent keeping up to "keep up". Its just not a very pleasant place anymore. I really dont think Italian food, Irish pubs, Jewish delis, and chain stores are exclusively better on Long Island. Really...

New Yorkers are a funny breed. They laugh and mock rural rednecks, and yet in many ways they are just as parochial in their own urban way as the "goobers" they mock. Maybe that is why they stay on the Island...its all they know and they like where they are. And for many, if you have owned your house for 40 years...often they dont feel what has happened as much as the new family looking for a house.

The beaches are hard to beat...and if you have the means, life can be pretty nice on Long Island Sounds too.

Anything east of New Haven is fine. Otherwise FFD county is much like LI.

Well Nick...I am a stay at home mother of 3. My husband makes about what you stated...and that's without overtime! Guess what... we live very well! We have 2 new cars. We go on vacation every summer. We put our children in baseball, guitar lessons, etc. The problem is anyone can overspend, wherever you live. If you learn to live within your means (personal finances in check), then you can certainly live here. Poor us! Now...what caused you to have so many angry things to say about LI? Just wondering! Enjoy your Utopia...wherever that may be!

PS...if you are not happy with LI, then you can always leave. If you are lucky enough to own a home here, then you can always reap the benefit of making lots on your house, then purchasing another one in Utopia! Good luck to you Long Island bashers!

I am trying to leave...it is not that easy...the real estate market is a nightmare...nobody wants to pay the taxes I pay to live on a 50X100 plot of land...and the days of reaping the benefit of making lots on a house are over...peole are giving their houses away....I am not a "Long Island basher", however, I am a native Long Islander who is having a difficult time making ends meet on over a six figure income...that is just not right!!!!
