Default No Kill Shelters on LI

Hi there.

I just found a stray cat by the side of the road. Since I have three dogs, keeping the cat is not an option, so I am looking for a no-kill shelter to drop him off at.

I tried NSAL but they refuse to take cats. Ridiculous.

Are there any others?

Have you tried Little Shelter in Huntington?

I would give them a call.

Good luck, and good for you for doing a good deed.

You probably saved that cat's life.

North Shore Animal League is terrible when it comes to stuff like this. I second the Little Shelter or you could try Bide A Wee in Wantagh. I think Valley Stream Cat Rescue is also a no kill option.

Yes. The Little Shelter in Huntington is the best place. I can't believe that North Shore Animal League won't take cats. This is a multi-million dollar enterprise with many people donating who would be very interested in this fact, I'll bet.

We adopted our cat at the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter in East Northport. They are a branch of the League for Animal Protection of Huntington. They just take cats and are no kill. In fact in talking to one of the volunteers back when we adopted, she said she had 5 cats herself; all of whome she took in from the shelter. They were very, very nice and it was CLEAN there. They have separate rooms where they let the cats out to exercise, climb, etc. We got our Tortie girl there 11 years ago now. She and her sister were found abandoned as 5 week old kittens on Bagatelle Road.

Thanks all. I'll give all of these mentioned a ring tomorrow to see who is accepting cats currently.

There is also ARF (Animal Rescue Fund) out east... Little Shelter is awesome.... Bide A Wee.....

Keep in mind, though, that it's still "kitten season" and many shelters are overcrowded and prefer to take kittens over cats since kittens are more adoptable. I would call around everywhere you can..... do a Google Search also.

There is a group called "Rescue Ink".... they won an award at Broadway Barks this year. They deal a lot with dogs but have one guy who specializes in cats. They may be able to help. These are big, burley biker dudes who rescue animals..... so sweet!!! LOL! www.rescueink.org

If all else fails, is there any way you can keep the cat?? Your dogs may decide to let the cat be a part of their pack... you never know!

North Shore Animal League has totally gotten too big for their britches... they used to be so amazing with animals but now that they're world-known and have so many sponsors and are on TV all the time, their ego has outgrown their mission.

I had no idea that NSAL doesn't take cats! I have been a member of their Cat Sponsorship Program for years..

There is a Cat Rescue Group based in Valley Stream. They don't have a shelter but they do have members all over LI who may take in strays. Their website is Valley Stream Cat Rescue

I got this information from a local PetCo when a sad little emaciated black cat began spending its afternoons in our driveway. It clearly needed more help than I could give it, and my SO and I are both very allergic to cats and dogs which prevented us taking it in. I know what happens to such animals in shelters and someone suggested asking about cat rescue groups at a pet store; that's how I found out about this group. We haven't seen the cat since the afternoon I got this information, though.... so I have no idea what ultimately happened to it....
