We're in suffolk, so we're not traveling too far,
but Id like some ideas on what to do for the day with kids ages6 and under. like specific stops.
we want to do the beach for a few hours in the morning/early afternoon.
are there spots to go where there's a playground on the beach? or something fun for kids ?
and i'd like to make a stop at sag harbor, is it a reasonable drive away? what is there ?
(this is a last minute decision for tomorrow) yes, friday of labor day weekend, but we plan to leave super early in the am, and head back late pm, at which time, im SURE westbound traffic will be empty..
Dont know much about stuff for children, but as far as Montauk goes I can tell you where the best scenery is. The Walking Dunes and Napeague are some of my favorite parts of that area, you can also get a nice tour of the Montauk lighthouse, which if you are up to it, a climb to the top.

Sag Harbor is a quaint village that some celebrities like to frequent that's not far from Montauk Highway, maybe 10-15 minutes, so you should check it out. It's a good place for strolling, getting the kids some ice cream, etc.
You can also stroll in East Hampton, Southampton, Bridgehampton, and Montauk village. Montauk Point is another few miles of driving form the village. All those towns are varying degrees of snooty or laid back. Not sure about playgrounds in Montauk.
not much to do in sag harbor or the other towns especially for children, most of the stuff for kids would be better in riverhead (dinosaur museum, aquarium)

Next time you go, check out the beach at Hither Hills State Park - it's where the Old Montauk Hwy. merges off Rt 27 . In season you will have to purchase a day ticket ($8) or have an Empire Pass. Beautiful ocean beach, clean facilities, and playgrounds for kids.
You can usually find free parking at the east end of town and walk to the beach. I love Montauk because the beach is so accessible to everyone !
