Brookhaven town is the worst. Contractors toss trash into the woods there(esp Middle Island and Ridge), and Brookhaven never wants to clean it up. Sometimes they say its the state DOT or DEC responsibility, but the state says it the town and the whole runaround continues.

I do home renovations and hire subs to do some parts of my projects.
One thing i noticed was if my worksite is filled with clutter the subs tend to leave their debris where ever it falls. For years now I make sure the areas are neat as a pin when the subs arrive and they just about always leave the job cleaning up after themselves.
I thinks its called the Broken Window Syndrome or something like that. But there was a big study done and the conclusion was that a window in view of a broken window was much more like to be broken than a window in view of no broken windows. Same goes for trash and graffitti.

I hate graffitti............

It is disheartening to see the litter, but I don't believe we're the worst offenders. I think the amount we see has a lot to do with the size of our population and just as much litter can be found in the outlying suburbs of other major cities.
Nothing like getting a flaming butt flicked on your windshield at 6:00am on the Northern State. And people wonder where road rage comes from...lol. Do that many people need to smoke first thing in the morning?
