Default LIRR Huntington Station parking - Late Train

I am commuting from Huntington Station to Penn and will be taking the 10:24am train. Where is the best place to find parking at that hour? Also, how safe is Huntington Station late at night since I will be returning to Huntington Station at 11pm? The south parking structure seems really creepy and dangerous but the outlying parking areas are poorly lit and far away . Any advice?

Huntington Station is NOT a safe area. At the train station in rush hours there are plenty of people around, but later at night I would not feel safe. There's always day laborers loitering around, and gang activity. I'd especially be wary in a parking garage.
If its possible you should park at Cold Spring Harbor instead. The lot there is pretty big actually.

Agreed. Lived in huntington all my life and I have seen that area go seriously down hill in the last 20 years. That is a crappy place to be at night. Park in cold spring harbor like the man said, its a short drive considering the alternative.

Depending upon where you live & the train schedule , Greenlawn is another option.

Thanks for all the advice. Any more you can give me would be great.

Unfortunately the 10:24am train is out of Huntington so Greenlawn is not an option. I wish it was. I commute from Greenlawn now and I love it but my schedule is changing at work.

Do you guys know how the parking is at Cold Spring Harbor at 10:15 - 10:30am? The lot always looks packed to me but I am seeing it out of the train window. Any parking tips?

I believe that you should be able to find parking pretty easily there at that time. its not a huge parking lot but there are usually ample spots.

Default Huntington Station

I walk home late from the train a couple times a week and have had no problems.
Just because hispanic people live in your neighborhood does not make them gang members or dangerous.
I have found my neighbors quiet and respectful.
Prejudice is ugly!

I generally agree with Emily. Its not the greatest area in the world, and it does have its share of problems. However, the area isn't as bad as some people might try and lead you to believe

Default Overnight parking

Has anyone experience with leaving a car at the Huntington Station overnight? I might be in a situation of having to do so....

I have commuted from both stations. Loved Cold Spring Harbor--used it for 20 years, even after I moved out of CSH, but parking used to be tough after 7:30AM. With the (very) recent decline in the banking/financial sectors, which made up a big part of commuters from that station, this may have changed noticeably. Part of the parking problem were people coming from further East, i.e. Greenlawn, East Northport, etc.
Small negatives: Most rush hour trains at night use the track on the south side and crossing over to the parking lot used to be a big pain when it rained or snowed. Also, there is no ticket counter, only machines, at the station.

In Huntington, I always used the garage on the south side (closer to where I live) as opposed to parking in the streets, but I caught a 6:30 something train .
On days when I returned late, I never encountered a problem (five years). The garages (both north and south) do fill up quickly, but by the time you take a train, some riders may be returning from the City--you'd have to go and see...
