Default School Districts

On Zillow it shows what schools you would attend if you lived in a particular house. Is it possible to go to a school outside your school district? The house is in Sayville - it lists its School District on both MLSLI and Zillow as Sayville. The elementary and middle school are both in Sayville but the High School is Bayport/Bluepoint. Is this possible? Is this a good or bad thing?

Zillow is inaccurate on most fronts...do a search on here for school boundaries and you should pull up a helpful link to confirm the school district.

I understand that you could live in one town, but be in another towns SD (for example - live in Massapequa, but be in the Amityville SD). I guess my question is - is it posible to be assigned to schools outside your school district?

I checked a census map on this site that shows school boundries - it shows the house in Sayville SD.

You can not be assigned to a school (like the zillow example you referenced where the elementary and secondary schools are Sayville but the High School is not) that is outside of your stated and zoned school district. If you are zoned for Sayville schools you are in them for the long haul. My guess is zillow simply pulled the nearest High School based on miles and posted Bluepoint/Bayport in error.

With the exception of the several school districts that do not have their own high school and pay tuition for the high school students in their school district to attend high school in another school district's high school.

Yes, but, wouldn't that make said "High School" the high school for their school district...otherwise their school district would stop at grade...8?

Semantics Walter...you get caught up in the semantics...

No semantics here: there are several school districts that stop at the eighth grade and then enter into contracts with one, two or more other school districts for the students in the school district without its own high school to attend a high school in one of the school districts with which the school district that does not have a high school has a contractual relationship.

These contracts may be for 3 or 5 years or so, and after a contract expires, either party to these contracts can choose to not continue these contractual relationships; and, if that is the case, the school district without a high school then has to enter into a contract with some other district that is willing to accept students from the school district without a high school.

I remember something along those lines with Lido Beach (?) having a contract with West Hempstead and that when the contract expired, students would end up at Long Beach HS. (I might have my beach towns mixed up, but I know West Hempstead figured into this.)

Remsenburg-Speonk UFSD has a contract with Westhampton Beach to send students to WBHS.

You are thinking about Island Park. Their high school students used to go to West Hempstead. Begining this year, students were given a choice of attending West Hempstead or Long Beach.
