Default Where to buy a house?

Im currently renting an apartment in cold spring harbor and working in nyc. Since paying rent is just throwing money away and paying my landlords mortgage, i would like to buy my own place. Housing on long island is very expensive but besides moving to shirley or mastic are there any other places on long island that homes are affordable? My salary is about 90k. Also if anyone knows of any other places to live that i can easily commute to nyc and is a suburb please let me know. I would really like to stay on the island but if its not on option im willing to move as long as i can commute to the city. thanks

Several people are going to reply to this thread saying "NO, FORGET ABOUT IT" and turn their noses up at the very notion that you could purchase a home on Long Island on $90k a year - but it is a possibility. It'll be something small, very small....but unless you're living in the world's largest apartment right now it'll probably be bigger (and private and YOURS, most importantly). There are tons of bungalow and cottage style homes scattered all over the shores on postage stamp sized properties. Contrary to popular belief, many thousands of people live in them. For $200k you can find something decent but probably needing a little work. They're out there, plenty in Bellmore, Seaford, Lindenhurst and Copiague. Good luck!

You are not going to get everything you dream of for 200k, especially since you need to commute to NYC. That is the major factor that keeps home prices as high as they are in some areas. You should look in Ronkonkoma & Lake Ronkonkoma-great easy train access & there are smaller cottage type homes there at good prices. Rocky Point, Sound Beach & Ridge all offer excellent values but don't make for an easy NYC commute.
