Default Narrowing it down: New Hyde Park, Lynbrook, RVC, Mineola

We commute to NYC & have a baby so we have been basing our search on
*commute time to NYC & ease of train station (i.e. parking, proximity from house to train)
*good school district
*price range - would like to keep at 500K or under

We have seen a few houses in New Hyde Park with Herricks SD which I've heard is great. We like the styles of homes there - brick capes etc. Also have heard Lynbrook is a solid town, good commute, good schools but borders on areas that I've heard are not as good? RVC is a bit out of our price range and we've seen the most there w/Oceanside schools. What we've seen in Mineola is okay, but we're not thrilled with the "town" area and would love a quaint "main street".

Any suggestions or feedback on how you would rate these towns against each other? We haven't done research on Port Wash but heard it's out of our price range for sure. Have also looked in Williston Park a bit

Lynbrook would be an excellent choice for you. If you want brick capes, look at the northern end of town. Excellent school district. Contrary to what you say you've heard, Lynbrook does not boarder on any bad areas.

Avoid Mineola. There are gang problems with MS13.

lol wut.

Oh yeah, and the parking situation at the NHP station is truly atrocious. And once you get a spot, it costs you money to park there, daily. And Williston Park is tiny and might as well be Mineola, don't even bother considering the place as two separate entities when looking around there.

RVC with O'side schools is perfect. That's where we are and we actually take the train from Baldwin (we are smack in the middle between the RVC and Baldwin stations). The parking is easier for the LIRR at Baldwin and you're on a stop earlier going westbound, so better selection of seats during rush hour in the AM.
Good luck!

I lived in Valley Stream which borders Lynbrook and I can say that south Valley Stream is nice. The only bad area is Elmont but you won't even see it unless you go to Home Depot.

I lived in NHP for 30 years and graduated from the Herricks SD. Excellent schools, plus the Mineola train station is only minutes away with better parking. Look for a house off Hillside Ave between Herricks Rd & Denton Ave.

Default For those who may not be familiar with New Hyde Park

When checking out houses that claim to be in New Hyde Park, you should be aware that New Hyde Park (531 acres) is less than one-fifth of the area of the "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" ZIP Code postal zone (3,339 acres), meaning that the majority of residential properties that have a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address are NOT in New Hyde Park.

Quickly eyeballing the map overlay of the "11040" ZIP Code postal zone versus village and hamlet borders, all or parts of 8 communities are within the borders of the "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" ZIP Code postal zone and, hence, places in these communities have a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address:

....Village of Lake Success, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of Manhasset, Town of North Hempstead
....Village of North Hills, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of Manhasset Hills, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of Herricks, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of Garden City Park, Town of North Hempstead
....Village of New Hyde Park, Towns of North Hempstead & Hempstead

For those who may not be familiar with New Hyde Park:

New Hyde Park is a village (incorporated in 1927) partly in the southwest part of the Town of North Hempstead and partly in the northwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of New Hyde Park in the Towns of North Hempstead and Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park in the Town of North Hempstead; on the east by the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park and the Hamlet of Garden City Park in the Town of North Hempstead and the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead; on the south by the Village of Garden City, the Village of Stewart Manor and the Village of Floral Park in the Town of Hempstead; and, on the west by the Village of Floral Park in the Towns of North Hempstead and Hempstead.

New Hyde Park is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places that have the community name in their mailing address are not in the village: places that have a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address that are not in the Village of NewHyde Park are in the Village of Lake Success, the Hamlet of Manhasset, the Village of North Hills, the Hamlet of Manhasset Hills, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of Herricks and the Hamlet of Garden City Park.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
