Bay Shore - fill me in
Bay Shore has a ton of reasonably priced homes.
I know there are some undesireable areas, but I don't know exactly where.
Can someone offer some idea of the good and bad areas of bay shore?
the schools?
I'm looking for somewhere pleasant to raise a couple of kids.
thanks

For those who may not be familiar with Bay Shore
The following map may prove helpful when others post their comments about which are the good or bad areas of Bay Shore, especially since many areas that have a "Bay Shore, NY 11706" mailing address are not in Bay Shore:
For those who may not be familiar with Bay Shore:
Bay Shore is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southwest section of the Town of Islip, in the southwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Bay Shore in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Baywood and the Hamlet of North Bay Shore; on the east by the Hamlet of Islip; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Village of Brightwaters.
The Hamlet of Bay Shore has a different border than does the "Bay Shore, NY 11706" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Bay Shore, NY 11706" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Bay Shore): places that have a "Bay Shore, NY 11706" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Bay Shore are in the Village of Brightwaters, the Hamlet of North Bay Shore, the Hamlet of West Bay Shore, the Hamlet of Baywood, the Hamlet of Islip, the Village of Saltaire and the Hamlet of Fire Island.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I grew up in N. Bayshore. (Potters Blvd and Spur dr) I went to Brentwood schools. And it was bad in the 70's!
But Bayshore schools arent the greatest either. There ARE decent places in Bayshore to live, but there are also some really BAD areas!

The "brightwaters farms"area is good.I could name probably most of the streets in that area.Very familiar with it.Stay away from N Bay Shore borderline brentwood.North of the SSP is okay but dont go too far north. The homes just north of SSP have very large yards.I lived on thompson drive for a few years(brightwaters farms area)its a good area.Stay away from the Bay shore train station,1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th avenue are also pretty bad,and i'd be iffy about the areas off of brentwood road. But i'm telling you the brightwaters farm area is very good. Many families. If you use mlsli dot com you can map where any house is.Any questions please feel free to pm me.Like i said i can tell you most of the streets over here.I grew up in bay shore.good luck with your search!

Im not 100% positive on the exact streets that are considered brightwaters farms, but from my experience living here and also searching for a home over here,Lombardy Blvd(Behing bally shopping center located on sunrise hwy) to Thompson drive. All the streets in between.Richland blvd, potter blvd, peters blvd, fern pl,poplar pl,ontarion dr,pine dr,asharoken blvd, ackerson blvd, etc.Just make sure you if you find a home on the computer in this area to map it because these blocks run to the other side of sunrise and the other side of southern state.Like i said you do not want to go too far north of southern state.Unfortunately many homes over here are in brentwood school district.Taxes will be lower due to that but i wouldn't send my kids to that district. This area in my opinion is very nice.I would have liked to stay here but my budget only allowed me further east.I've never had a problem here.I'm in my 20s and am a female and i'd feel safe walking around here at night.Hope i helped a little.PM me if you need any other info.

You also have homes with bayshore mailing with west islip schools........just n of ss off udall road , down off of bay shore road from there to almost the ss entrance is also west islip schools going back south to muncy road......
and behind lowes......from just east of robert moses pky to a couple blocks west of Manor lane (from sunrise hwy to orinoco drive....
the homes are cheaper than buying in west islip but you will have the advantage of the schools......
I think bay shore still has a way to go but has changed alot over the years.....when the market went crazy plenty of new young homebuyers couldnt afford say west islip and went looking there....many areas that may have not been the most desireable have been revamped by young families starting out......
I would also agree with the brentwood schools......I know many who have left for reasons of their kids safety and well being......

Like most towns it has its bad parts. But overall i think its a good town to live in.To the OP,JimnSue also pointed out another good part. You should look into that part of town. For dempographics and all of that good stuff i'd check this website or wikipedia.
