Lynbrook and airplane noise
Hi,
Just was in Lynbrook for house inspection. One thing that we noticed this time was louder and more frequent plane noise. This could be a potential deal-breaker for us because DH often works from home.
When I asked the seller about it, she mentioned that planes are louder during cloudy weather. She wasn't sure if it was just that sound traveled more or planes flew lower. Any idea if this is true?
Anyone who lives in Lynbrook north of Sunrise, can you tell me how noisy and how frequent the planes are? If it is that much noisier during inclement weather, is it reasonably quiet during fair weather?
Thanks so much!

I live in Valley Stream. But I can definitely tell you that planes sound way louder during rain/cloudy weather then during sunnier weather. I don't know why.

Aircraft noise will "bounce" off the base of the clouds and be reflected back down...so yes it will sound louder on cloudy days. JFK also uses an easterly runway configuration when winds are easterly (as they often are during bad weather here)...so you are probably hearing the departures more.

Thanks for the replies! How does it usually sound in clear weather where you are, Tymel?

I can notice them, but only like once a day will it be like wow there's an airplane going over. It's not to bad, I have been living here for 13 years so I got used to it. Its no biggie.

My stepdaughter lives in North Lynbrook with her mother, I notice it when I'm there but its not as loud as the train that is very close to their house.

As an airplane just flew over I remembered something. Sometimes the airplanes do sound loud enough that you have to raise your voice or raise the volume on the TV. But that's not very often. Also, once you close the window you don't hear the sound AT ALL. So November-May it won't be a problem.

The plane noise here in Westbury can be bad too, esp on weekends, its one after another.

I found an article in the NY Times (from last month) that says that due to construction on some runways in JFK there are more planes coming over Lynbrook, Valley Stream, Elmont, Floral Park, Stewart Manor, Garden City, New Hyde Park, and Garden City Park. The aircraft detours are expected to last about a year, and the most frequency occurring between 10 pm and 6 am. Have people been disturbed by increased noise at night from planes?
