Job in DeerPark-Where to live?
Hi everyone. I am moving to Long Island from just above Charlotte. My job will be in Deer Park, but I have been advised to stay away from living in that area. I am a single mom with 4 kids, ages 3,5,7,9 so school district is super important! I would also love to be in an area where its safe for them to ride bikes, etc. outside. I don't mind a commute, but would prefer to keep it around 30 minutes. On a side note, if anyone cares to give me some places to explore with the kids once we get there that would be awesome. Thanks! sarah

Lets start from the beginning.....What is your monthly budget for housing? Renting or buying?

For those who may not be familiar with Deer Park
First, for things to do, here are two sites that offer weekly eMail newsletters: LongIsland.com and About Long Island NY, and, here's what could be the best site: Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission.
There are nice areas in some of the communities in the vicinity of the Hamlet of Deer Park, such as the Hamlet of Dix Hills and the Hamlet of Melville in the town of Huntington and the Hamlet of North Babylon, and a bit further away, there is the Hamlet of West Babylon, the Village of Babylon and the Village of Lindenhurst, all in the Town of Babylon, with some, such as Dix Hills because it's in the Half Hollow Hills Union Free School District, more expensive than others, whose school districts are not as highly rated.
For those who may not be familiar with Deer Park:
Deer Park is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast part of the Town of Babylon, inside the almost right angle formed by the Babylon/Huntington and Babylon/Islip town lines in the southwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Deer Park in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Dix Hills in the Town of Huntington (the Babylon/Huntington town line); on the east by the Hamlet of Brentwood and the Hamlet of Baywood in the Town of Islip (the Babylon/Islip town line); on the south by the Hamlet of North Babylon; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Wyandanch and the Hamlet of Wheatley Heights.
The Hamlet of Deer Park has a different border than does the "Deer Park, NY 11729" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Deer Park, NY 11729" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Deer Park and a place can have other than a "Deer Park, NY 11729" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Deer Park): places that have a "Deer Park, NY 11729" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Deer Park are in the Hamlet of Wyandanch; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Deer Park with a "Wyandanch, NY 11798" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I am going to rent. I want to live on the island and learn my way around, etc. before simply jumping into a home. Plus, I have to wait until my house sells in nc as well. I have been looking at Craigslist and there are houses in my budget pretty much everywhere, I just don't know what areas are good and which aren't. Someone suggested Farmingdale, and I was told to stay away from Central Islip bc of the schools.
I mainly want to ensure that my children are in a safe area and a good school. Also, they are competitive gymnasts and I want them to attend Gold Medal Gymnastics in Huntington, so I guess I need to be kind of close to there as well.

"Farmingdale" can be quite confusing as the "Farmingdale, NY 11735" ZIP Code postal zone is much larger than the Village of Farmingdale and serves an area in both the Nassau County and Suffolk County, including the Village of Farmingdale, the Hamlet of South Farmingdale and part of the Hamlet of Plainedge in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County and the Hamlet of East Farmingdale in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County.

Renting before buying is a smart move (IMHO).
Still, budget will come into play.
Working in Deer Park and after school activities in Huntington, leave you with several possibilities:
Depending on where your place of work is, possibly Deer Park (parts are in HHH SD), Dix Hills, Melville, So. Huntington, Huntington Station (yes, there are very nice areas!), Huntington or even E. Northport, and the Farmingdale area around the College, off Rt 110 (partly also HHH SD)
I would not recommend living on the South Shore, simply because getting to and from Huntington can be a hassle (did it for a while myself).
Not all of the above areas have a lot of (legal) apartments and with several children, I'm guessing you're looking for a 3 BR apartment?
If you want more info, just let me know

I'm actually looking at renting a house, they all seem to be around 2500 a month no matter where you are, which is fine.
Of course today I found out that I will not be in Deer Park, but some part of Suffolk County. I guess I will need to repost when they finalize my location.
Thanks for the input everyone!
