Sections in Rockville Centre?
Could someone explain the different sections in Rockville Centre? On the realtors websites they mention something about Cantebury and some others I can't remember.
Thank you for your help.

I've lived here in Rockville Centre for the last 14 years and love it! Great schools, wonderful neighbors and a fantastic place to raise children.
Cantebury is a very lovely, upscale area in the northwestern part of Rockville Centre. Lots of tudors and colonials on large plots. Cantebury is north of De Mott and west of the Links golf course. The Harvard area encompasses Harvard Road, and the streets that run off it; this area is in he western section of the village, south of De Mott. The Bryn Mawr section is also south of De Mott, but is to the east of the Harvard area. Riverside is on the south side of Sunrise Highway. Greystone is the area that is to the east of Long Beach Road and runs north from the Rec Center and stretches up toward the incorporated village limits up past where the Links property ends on Long Beach Road.
When you look at Rockville Centre real estate, be aware of where the incorporated village limits are (to take advantage of the lower electric rates) and also where the different school district boundaries are. It is possible to own a house in the village, but not be in the village school district. Do not take any broker or owner's word for this - check maps and be sure. Have heard of people being 'burned' and would like to avoid this happening. Homes within the incorporated village and also within the RVC school district will be priced higher.
Hope this helps!

That's really good advice, because about one in seven places that are in the "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" ZIP Code postal zone (2,529 acres) are NOT in the Village of Rockville Centre (2,196 acres).
For those who may not be familiar with Rockville Centre:
Rockville Centre is a village (incorporated in 1893) in the center of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Rockville Centre in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Lakeview and the Hamlet of South Hempstead; on the east by the Hamlet of South Hempstead and the Hamlet of Baldwin; on the south by the Hamlet of Oceanside; and, on the west by the Village of East Rockaway, the Village of Lynbrook and the Hamlet of Lakeview.
The Village of Rockville Centre has a different border than does the "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address and not be in the Village of Rockville Centre): places that have a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address that are not in the Village of Rockville Centre are in the Village of Lynbrook and the Hamlet of Lakeview.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Excellent! I could not have described it better! I have lived in both the North side of town (New Canterbury -- Covert School/RVC) as well as the South side (Riverside) -- both offer incredible schooling, strong neighborhood feel and great accessibility to the outerlying areas.

It's been awhile since you posted, Tanto, but just wanted to say that the Bryn Mawr section is absolutely gorgeous. Most of it is in the Wilson school district (grades K-6), which both of my children attended before moving on to the Middle School and then South Side High School. Always check census maps to be sure about which school district a property falls into.
We have access to two nearby hospitals, Mercy Hospital to the north, which is within Rockville Centre and South Nassau Communities Hospital, located just south of RVC, in Oceanside.
RVC may have more restaurants than any other community on the south shore. We also have many local merchants, shops of all kinds and a Long Island Rail Road station, which can whisk you into Manhattan in about 45 minutes.
Good luck!

What are the areas in RVC that should be avoided? Heard there are some that are unsafe, belong to non RVC school districts, or require flood insurance? The top elementary is Riverside? Are all elementaries good?

There is a section with an RVC address that's actually Lakeview, with Malverne schools. If you see any houses with an RVC address that are suspiciously cheap, check the district.
There's also a section (of which at least part is part of the village of RVC) that goes to Oceanside schools--a bit less desirable but fine. Certainly not unsafe or anything like that.
If you're intent on RVC schools, do a district search rather than a place search, and if you want to be in the village always confirm it. (Realtor, village hall, Census website, whatever.)

You can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) a house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)
And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.
