Default How to find out who owns open land?

I was looking at an aerial view on MLSLI of a neighborhood in Commack. There were houses that totally surrounded a pretty large wooded area - there was no way to get into this area without going through someones property. Who owns that area? The town? Could houses or something else be built on that wooded area? A developer buys a house that surrounds the wooded area - knocks it down and uses it as an entry road into the wooded area to build houses? Is this posible?

You need to find out if this is in the Town of Huntington or the Town of Smithtown. Once you know for certain, try calling the tax assessor's office to find out how owns the land, it's zoning, any restrictions or covenants, etc.

If you can, print out a copy or two of the ariel. When you go to the town you are going to have to figure out the legal (sect/block/lot) of these lots from a tax map in order for them to help you.
