Great, now I'm hungry.
I've been gone for 14 yrs now and my mouth still waters at the thought of Briermere Farms Blueberry pie I guess that and the yearly apple and pumpkin picking are about the only things I miss about LI. (can't do those things here in FL) The traffic, taxes and congestion were hell to deal with even back then and when I go "home" to visit family and friends, it never ceases to amaze me that each time it is worse. What truly upsets me is the disregard for property that I see on LI now. Filthy streets and roadsides, graffiti on walls. It's such a shame. I grew up in Smithtown and loved it. However, the years have not been kind to my hometown and I'm sorry to say I wouldn't want to live there anymore.

Sounds like they are persecuting themselves!!!!

Joe, I am talking about the ones who left Iran in the 90's & after, persecuted by Muslims.

Whenever you have Any group coming in from a 3rd world country they will have a Very different view of how to work with government.

Once the natives are outnumbered or outspent, the area is changed.

Like I said, I would not want to live in an area that has been transformed like that, either, but, frankly, unless people saw what you were writing about I do not think they would believe you, it sounds anti-semitic & exaggerated.
But, I do not know how to write aobut it in a polite yet factual way either!

The late 80's 90's ones, Yep thats them.
And your right there is no way to write about it in a polite yet factual way without coming off anti-semitic & exaggerated. They are so outragious it would be impossible, nobody could live with them but each other.

I can see why the Mid East Muslums didnt want them around also, what idont understand is why would all these older Jewish people who ran the NS-LIJ hospital system bring and welcome them here with well paid internships.
Was it money, a Jewish "brotherhood" thing ?

Isnt that equil to shooting yourself in the foot with a 300mm morter round?

your messae is so true. that is why i moved to Easton, PA. It is 62 miles from Manhatten. It takes just over an hour (depending on weather) for me to get to work in NYC. Prices are not nearly expensive as LI and a lot of New Yorkers live here.

Way too expensive.
Public Transportation is slow and expensive.
Taxes are high and never stop rising.
School taxes are high and never stop rising due to corrupt school officials.
People are rude and unfriendly in general.

People here drive like animals, and don't follow basic traffic rules or have the common courtesy to get out of the left lane if they are going to drive slow.
Even the old people drive like animals.. today I was driving to school (stony brook university) and some old man almost ran me off the road on purpose, because he preferred that I go behind him where traffic merged, when I was in front of him already. Everyone has that selfish ny mentality. They rather hold up traffic than have some common courtesy and move out of the way, and all they care about is themselves. I remember the first time I drove out of state, I was in the left lane and people would flash their headlights because they wanted to pass, but then I realized, all American people are not scum like new yorkers are, and when I wanted to drive fast, people moved out of the left lane automatically for me as it should be. Had I never left ny, I probably wouldn't have even know that this was normal, since I had never ever seen it done on long island.

Everyday up and down nicholls rd is like a death sentence, I am just hoping my day doesn't come before I move out of this hellhole, because the way people drive here you are lucky to make it home alive.

It's ridiculously overcrowded, you can't go anywhere between the hours of 4 to 6pm unless you don't mind sitting in traffic for a good 40 minutes. Forget public events or going to the mall during holidays etc..

This place is absolutely dead there is nothing to do, no culture, no sense of community, ever. The only good thing about long island is the summer, if you like the beach that is, that is the only time it's great. NYC is close, but it's hell getting there and back, a train ride that should take 20 minutes takes 2 hours and 20 minutes, and costs about $25. Driving is also a hassle.

The movie theaters on a Friday night are where all these wannabe thug rapper teenagers go to look for trouble. I recently got into a fight against 12 little thugs, because I was the only one in the theater who had the balls to put these kids in their place.

Now, what really tops it all off and makes it unbearable, the cost of living!
To make it on long island, you have to either come from a rich family, or live at home until you're about 30 years old or you can bust your ass all week to live in someone's basement apartment. Home prices are out of control.. it's just absolutely ridiculous.

And the cherry on top, Stony Brook University in this year's princeton review got rated #3 as most depressing (right below military and technical schools) and #4 as least happy students (once again, right below military and technical schools). If that isn't a reflection of long island I don't know what is.

There is something they have labeled the "brain drain" going on. Due to the cost of living here, about 20,000 college graduates move out of state every year. I will gladly be leaving when I graduate this year, I will only miss my family and the beaches, other than that I wish I was raised in some other area of America.

Think again. It is going to be just like Long Island in the next 5 years (with the conspicuous consumption & outrageous home prices). Look at what happened to NJ & now North Carolina. There really are no affordable or middle class areas left in the NYC metro area (within 100 miles of Manhattan). You either have areas where you need to make in the mid six figures (along with the conspicuous debt financed consumption), & other parts which are downright ghetto & seedy (ex. but are overpriced considering the area) ex. Jersey City.

The housing price / rent bubble of the past seven years has shown no signs of letting up even as real estate prices in other parts of the country have slowed to single figure appreciation.

Hey, Long Island is VERY diverse, you could live there for years & not encouter some of these bad things, if you so chose.

Look at where he would work & you would live, then decide! There is a lot of beauty on Long Island, trust me!

Please. do not listen to these insane whiners. LI is a great place. It has one of the lowest crime rates in the country and some of the highest standards of living. Income is at the top in the country, so is retail spend and savings. There are MANY top school disricts, tons of shopping, very nice beaches and parks, cultural spots, and a lot of good places to eat. Plus, you are very close to the greatest city in the world. You also have the nicest summer resort area in the country...the Hamptons and North Fork.

People on this board are bitter b/c houses are not cheap and neither are taxes. Yes, it's a problem, but there are about 3million poeple here that seem to think it's ok, and there would be a lot more if more people could afford it (and I'm sure more can, they just want a $200K house).

You have to research yourself and come visit, that's the only way to do it. These people are not always to be trusted (I guess both positive and negative).
