Default Companies leaving is a problem

I would have to disagree that you think it's not a problem that the company left an area or country. It is a problem when we loose jobs in any sector to global competition. First it's manufacturing, then service labor jobs to Mexicans then its even white collar computer telephone support reps over in India..... Its only a matter of time that it could affect your job. I hope your planning to retrain yourself also. We really can even out the playing field with China and begin eating rice and living in grass huts. I don't know the answer, I just know that the trend can lead us all into a bad economic position. My husband moved his manufacturing business to Raleigh NC. He is a mechanical engineer and creates ball bearing systems. He is highly educated and trained. I am grateful that we found another state to reestablish ourselves in. We purchased a brand new commercial building @
$ 110. per sq ft. and the utilites are half. Taxes are less than a quarter. We now have a fighting chance to compete. There was a time inbetween that I had to wait tables to help out and I have a BS in Accounting. I couldn't find a job flexible enough for a family's schedule and it was not all due to poor planning just poor government politics.

Cleaning tables and being able to afford a decent place to live? No! I wouldn't expect any minimum wage earner to be able to afford to live in too many places. If they wanted a decent place to live then they should have thought about getting a better job. Those kinds of jobs get done by mostly college students and/or retirees. Making a career out of it is silly.

I know five teachers on Long Island; and I knew them before they were teachers. Yes, they busted their tail bones like you would not believe. But they did not use it as an excuse. They all now own their own homes, and live very comfortably.

Hey gypsy soul! You sound so much like me, my parents used to mock me for the simple things and my non judgemental attitude. I like some nice things, I have a pocketbook problem, I love them, but I could care less what pocketbook my friend or neighbor just got. My friend who lives in a "better"area than I her kids are a mess, drugs drinking lots of problems. I think being an educater is the hardest job, if you are a good one, I was studying Nursing it was too time consuming for my children for me to be away so much, I am returning to school just to finish my degree in early childhood. i would love to teach preschool always wanted to, but my parents said be a nurse you will make a fortune, they called being a preschool teacher just a babysitter. My son had a preschool teacher who was the best and she was an angel, she once told me that she loved what she did, and it showed. She is so good Kindergarten is a review for him. It really is so nice when a teacher really loves what they do. Good Luck to you!

I have nothing against people who earn minimum wage. But get serious, you can't expect them to be able to afford a house and raise a family on it. Most people plan their lives in advance. It has nothing to do with being snooty and everything to do with being responsible.

People in general on Long Island don't judge you by what you own. That's called being insecure.

Check, while I don't always agree with your delivery, I agree with your message. There's nothing wrong with working in a minimum wage job if that is what one chooses to do but don't expect to have it all and cry that life is unfair when you can't.

Gypsy, I am a teacher. Believe me, I know how hard it is to find a job. I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. The one thing I would say is you have to be persistent. It also helps to know people in the field that can help you make connections. Get out there and talk to people! Best of luck.

Not really. I usually eat the toppings before I get to the customer's house.

Default Home Grown Snobbery

Oh yes, definitely, people from Queens /Brooklyn move to Long Island to " get away" from this or that. (crowds, no parking. lack of greenery..)
so there is a built in distain
or shall I say I built in " just leave me alone" mentailty. When they acquire more wealth and a larger home, the leave me alone mentality becomes " dont move in my neighborhood."
Then ,we have our very own ,Long Island home grown ,snobs..
I know this because I have seen this happen in my own family. its actually very funny to watch people change .!

You give some people a patch of grass , and they think theyre the Vanderbilts !

Thats why it makes me laugh when people talk about "depressed neighborhoods " for homes under 400,000. Geez , get real !
Heres a story; I have childhood friends who have a home in Sands Point. husband a lawyer, wife a lawyer .
The first time we went to visit , my husband and I thought we took a wrong turn. we thought we had driven into a Hilton hotel front entrance, no joke, the house was that big. They are beautiful, courteous people,. but I thought to my self,, its just the 2 of them , what posssed them to buy a house this big? The wife told me they dont even use half the rooms anymore.
Well it turns out that they are selling it because they cant afford to heat it, anymore, and they cant afford the maids (yes, i said cant afford the maids !) anymore .. Wow, now thats really roughin it !! LOL
Thats a perfect example of people i have no sympathy for. They buy a home to keep up appearances. then realize that their ego has led them into a trap of their own making. If people would buy what they need, instead of what they want to show off.. there wouldnt be half the forclosures on Long Island
..

NAFTA, was established by George Bush senior for the sole purpose of developing cheap labor in Mexico. he made a deal with Vicente Fox.
That was the beginning of the end of the American Manufacuring Trade. Since that time thousands of big companies have pulled up steaks and jumped overseas.. They call it "outsourcing" but otherwise known as. " make the rich ,richer" and screw the working man" [/b]

We have to vote in- politicians who are for THE WORKING PEOPLE.
