Default Merrick Questions

I am curious to know what the differences are between Merrick, North Merrick and South Merrick. Is one area nicest of all 3? How would you rate this area? My husband and I are considering relocating to Merrick from NYC. Our budget is around 800K.

No such thing as "Merrick" as far as I know at least in common nomenclature. Merrick and No. Merrick are hamlets so legaly it doesn't really matter.

At any rate, there is a big cultural difference btwn "North Merrick" and "South Merrick"

North of Merrick Road is well-to-do but working class, more Irish and Catholic, many cops and firemen sprinked in. Homes tend to smaller and less expensive though Merrick Woods is lovely.

South Merrick has a much more Jewish flavor and homes and larger and there is more money. The area is zoned for Kennedy HS (North=Calhoun) and kids have the rep of being spoiled.

The "least desirable" area of North Merrick is considered to be west of Merrick Ave, most specifically near Meadowbrook Rd. and the Meadowbrook Parkway. It's the most working clas area, close to Uniondale, but I find very charming in its own right.

Good Luck. I have family in North Merrick (with kids in Old Mill Road School) and they love it.

I live in merrick. Its not a "bad" area , but its getting there. I have 2 younger brothers in the school system there. Both of them will be attending catholic highschools. The drugs in merrick are outrageous. Every kid infront of dunkin dounuts is selling/smoking pot. Its not really where you to raise kids, in my opinion.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Merrick and North Merrick

First, there is no Village nor Hamlet of "South Merrick". My guess is that this is a neighborhood in the south part of the Hamlet of Merrick.

Second, about one of every three places that have a "Merrick, NY 11566" mailing address (3,860 acres) are not in the Hamlet of Merrick (2,647 acres), while North Merrick is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address.

For those who may not be familiar with Merrick and North Merrick:

Merrick is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-south part of the Town of Hempstead, in the central-south part of Nassau County

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Merrick in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Merrick and the Hamlet of North Bellmore; on the east by the Hamlet of Bellmore; on the south by the East Bay and Merrick Bay; and, on the west by the Village of Freeport.

The Hamlet of Merrick is one of those many villages and hamlets where many places that have the community name in their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have a "Merrick, NY 11566" that are not in the Hamlet of Merrick are in the Hamlet of North Merrick and the Hamlet of North Bellmore; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Merrick that have a "Freeport, NY 11520" mailing address.

North Merrick is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-west part of the Town of Hempstead in the central-south part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of North Merrick in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of East Meadow; on the east by the Hamlet of North Bellmore; on the south by the Hamlet of Merrick; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Roosevelt and the Hamlet of Uniondale.

North Merrick is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of North Merrick have a "Merrick, NY 11566" mailing address and "Bellmore, NY 11710" mailing address.

I live in N.Merrick and my son goes to Calhoun...9th grade. Yes, there are drugs and drinking, but that happens at all schools anywhere you go. All kids explore. It's up to the parents and their upbringing of their child to know better. My son is into sports and some times hangs out by dunkin donuts...not buying or doing drugs. Between me and other parents, we drive by and keep an eye out on our kids and must know where they are. As long as you are an involved parent and keep on top of your kid, there's less chance of them being bad.

I'm getting away from the point. Merrick is really nice. You do have some snotty people here though. Call a real estate agent to take you around to look at homes in North and South Merrick. Better yet, go to www.mlsli.com and see what you can buy in your price range first. Maybe take a drive around the area on the weekend as well.

Good Luck.
