moving to the area maybe...
My wife might have a job opportunity in the area, she is originally from upstate NY but we don’t really the know Long Island the area. How gay/lesbian friendly is the area?? Are there any areas or neighborhoods better then other for a lesbian family? Are there any nice lesbian friendly bars, coffee shops and what not? How open are the schools are there social groups for kids that are open to gay families? We know housing sames to vary greatly depending on the area of Long Island. We are not sure what the best areas for us might be to live and hang out. Other than taking the train into New York city, are there any areas were you can be near to dining and night life, shows or sporting events? How is the public transportation on Long Island? We are hoping to be able to get a 3+bed, 2+bath, with lots of living space, maybe a game room or finished basement, and a good sized yard for the doggies. Would appreciate constructive feed back on the area.

I live in Eastern Suffolk, its a bit more rural here. Not really convenient to NYC. My neighbors are a female couple, they do not have children but they have a large network of friends that are lesbian couples & have kids. It is a non-issue to everyone here. In my old neighborhood-Oakdale I had neighbors "Sue & Carol" that were older than me but fit in just fine. I also know a few people my age or a little younger that were raised on LI with 2 Moms & none of them ever had any problems besides the normal stuff all kids have.
I think LI is really becoming a gay friendly place overall & IMO Lesbian couples/families are even more warmly received than gay men at this point.
Good luck to you!

Huntington would fit the bill nicely. It is very gay friendly (it even hosts an annual gay pride parade), has an active dining and nightlife scene and is an easy commute to the city.

I don't think that you should have much of a problem here on Long Island......It's not to say that you won't come across those close minded attitudes here and there....
But since we are close to the city and fire island I think most people here are pretty open as long as you are a good people and take care of your home and property.... As with any neighbor......
Good luck with your search....

I agree with Tom, Huntington would seem to have everything you're looking for, easy "acceptance", tons of dining spots and cultural events, weekend night life, a doggie park, and an easy commute. Public transportation beyond the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is spotty.
