Dish Network vs. Cable?
I'm moving to Long Island from NYC, what works better - Dish Or Cable? What should I expect to pay on a monthly basis? What are the prons and cons?

I prefer Dish. I get it through a package from Verizon and my TV, phone, and internet cost me about $120/mo without any of the movie channels. I dislike Cablevision immensely and refuse to line the pockets of those greedy people. Also, my Cable used to go out all the time before I was able to get the Dish. Now I only have problems during severe thunderstorms (at which point the power is usually the next thing to go where I live anyway). And once I lost it during a blizzard. I've been happy with the picture quality from the dish too. I think the prices are about the same, but you want to shop around - package deals are the best way to go - if you can combine phone, internet and tv into one bill.

So you can get Dish Network in a bundle with Verizon instead of Direct TV?
I would have switched to that but I prefer Dish networks channel line-up compared to Direct TV, and Direct TV doesn't offer talk free music channels while Dish, Cable, and Fios do.

I just dumped optonline for Verizon FiOs internet. Once FiOs TV is available in the area, I am dumping Cablevision. Satellite would require me to cut down trees, so I did not go that route.

The bundle w/Verizon is Dish Network, Verizon phone service, and some other internet (NOT high speed). I looked into it about a year ago and, even though the price was "ok", I didn't like the rest of the deal and didn't take it.
FiOS is a completely different package and much, much better. I currently have Cablevision but the second FiOS is available in this area, I'm switching.

Actually it is Direct TV, not Dish Network. Sorry, never really paid attention to that.

It's still not good because, unless you have the FiOS package, you're NOT going to have high-speed internet access..

I am very pleased with the FiOS internet speed -- it has been faster than Cable. The phone service also seems clearer. Still waiting on the TV service to come to town.

How are you getting FiOS internet & phone w/o the TV?
The Verizon package I looked into was the only one available in my area because FiOS isn't here yet and it had regular Verizon phone service, Direct TV (or Dish?), and some other internet service that wasn't high speed. I asked when FiOS would be available and they said it would be quite some time because of all the wheelings, dealings, etc that Verizon has to go through with the Town officials before they will be permitted to bring FiOS to the area (that goes for all area, by the way)

I had phoned Verizon about 3 weeks ago complaining about my phone and they offered me the FiOS phone service. They gave me a package with FiOS internet for $60/month. I am in the Town of Brookhaven and this area has had the phone and internet for about a year or so.
