Default East Rockaway?

Hi,
My husband and I found are looking at properties on MLS and have found a few that we like in East Rockaway. We don't know much about the area, except that it has good schools (according to online?). Can anyone offer any insight about the area?

Thanks!!!
Jen

What are you interested in knowing?

Mostly older housing stock with smaller lots. Working/middle class population. Cute little town - everything closes early. Area is low in crime, and people are friendly and civic minded.

Not to be rude or anything, but with the outrageous property taxes, I'd say the people must be working, but I wouldn't call them "working class." ( friends who live there are paying 12k a year in taxes for an average old house with no upgrades) Yeah, they have jobs, and pretty good ones to afford the area.

For those who may not be familiar with East Rockaway:

East Rockaway is a village (incorporated in 1910) is in the south part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of East Rockaway in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Lynbrook; on the east by the Village of Rockville Centre and the Hamlet of Oceanside; on the south by the Hamlet of Bay Park and the Village of Hewlett Harbor; and, on the west by the Village of Hewlett Harbor and the Hamlet of Hewlett.

The Village of East Rockaway has a different border than does the "East Rockaway, NY 11518" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "East Rockaway, NY 11518" mailing address and not be in the Village of East Rockaway): places with an "East Rockaway, NY 11518" mailing address that are not in the Village of East Rockaway are in the Hamlet of Hewlett, the Village of Lynbrook and the Hamlet of Bay Park and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of East Rockaway with a "Lynbrook, NY 11563" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

I have a relative and a couple of friends in e. rockaway. It's very nice where my sister in law lives, she is south of atlantic ave, very close to the bay(not the canal). nice size house on a good size lot. However, her taxes are $11,500 . My friends are north of Atlantic Ave, on 2nd ave.. Smaller house and lot, about $9000.00 taxes, but near LIRR.

My brother lives in East Rockaway in a very nice part of town called Bay Park. It's by the canals. Almost everyone owns boats. Smaller lots and houses, but a very nice family-oriented neighborhood.

From your description, Tom, while your brother's house may have an "East Rockaway, NY 11518" mailing address, it's NOT in East Rockaway: it's in Bay Park.

For those who may not be familiar with Bay Park:

Bay Park is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the south part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Bay Park in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of East Rockaway; on the east by the Hamlet of Oceanside; on the south by the Hewlett Bay; and, on the west by the Village of Hewlett Harbor.

Bay Park is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Bay Park have an "East Rockaway, NY 11518" mailing address.

If you have kids, another thing to consider is school districts. SD #19 is East Rockaway School District, SD #20 is Lynbrook School District. East Rockaway can go to either depending on your address. Taxes will be higher if you are in SD #20.

I beg to differ. 12k is not unusual! (Unfortunatly) The "public" info you get on those county and town websites (and real estate sites) isn't always accurate. There are several HUGE mistakes on mine. My combined general & school tax record is off by almost $2000.

If you can find something with a 7K tax...buy it.

By the way...East Rock is a nice town, located between Oceanside, Lynbrook and the 5 towns area. Great access to the LIRR and NYC.
