Where was Mitchell Field? Wasn't that a military airport, or something to that effect. I think it was near the Nassau Community College area.
I remember, just barely remembering when I was in Elem. we went on a field trip there. One of the student's fathers worked there and we got to go on a plane, just walking through and then visiting the rest of MF.
I think I am remembering correctly; if not it makes a cute story anyway.

My family spent some years there when I was a kid in Massapequa (motzoh-pizza). I went to Carmen Road School and remember going to a drive-in with the 'rents which had a small amusement park, called The Jolly Roger. I still expect to see Freedomland where Co-op City is now.

Just FYI- I deleted my own message because I hit it 2x.

Anyway, yes, Freedomland. I still have my old game box for Freedomland. I remember Jolly Roger and I guess I will have to venture over to New Jersey to post memories of Adventure Land.

Red face Mitchel Field/Jolly Roger

Someone asked about Mitchel Field & Nassau Community College... well, Nassau Comm. College was built at the old Mitchel Field site. I grew up within walking distance of it & I started college at NCC. I also remember Jolly Rogers well... It was on Hempstead Tpke. in the North Massapequa area I think... or maybe it was Levittown (not sure which one). Anyway, we also used to play miniature golf at Nunleys & go on that old merry-go-round afterwards... I would always try to grab the brass ring! Brings back a LOT of memories...

Cool You mentioned Friendly Frost?

Just unearthed your queries from 2 months back. From 1953 at the Bethpage/Plainview border I remember some of these things. We moved into a “development” amidst a half dozen farms in this corridor with owners names like Gerhardt, Brunn and Borrella coming to mind. As a little tike, I worked for the Borrellas (bachelor brothers), shucking feed corn and delivering eggs.
Old Country Road was a mile away and was indeed two lanes. Plainview was little more than a development concept situated between Hicksville, Woodbury and Old Bethpage. The intersection of Mannetto Hill and Old Country had a Crown gas station and an ice cream stand called Jack Yerk’s (which would later move out to Route 25 at the Smithtown Bypass) and that was it. Further east on Old Country Road was a prison farm that abutted the property of a State run TB sanatorium on Round Swamp Road.
It seems that the Woodbury Shopping center (strip mall later to become “Plainview SC”) was up but not Morton Village.
The shopping destinations for my mother were still quite a drive up on Hempstead Turnpike. There was a fun place there for us kids called Jolly Roger’s indoor Carney stuff + rides, including a wonderful old-fashioned carousel with pumping horses and brass rings.
P.S. - The former name for Farmingdale was "Hard Scrabble" - no joke.

Yes...I remember Friendly Frost,as my father worked there for about 20 years and ended by being the district manager! He worked in the store at 121? Frost Street, in Garden City, or was it Hempstead? That big sign they had of an atom with neutrons and protons spinning around it was a real hoot. I wonder where that sign went?

Smiley's Happyland was the amusement park, Jolly Roger was the restaurant attached to it. It was on the corner of Rte107 & Hempstead Tpke in Bethpage. Many of our hearts broke the day it was torn down and became a shopping center.

I ended up working at the Mel Weitz' Foodtown, the supermarket which was erected upon the property of the former Happyland.

The Old Miracle Mile before it got so uppity? There was Newberry's and Penn Fruits ( a forerunner of big supermarkets) . B. Altman's was at the other end. Franklin Simon's. Brentano's Book Store & I guess lots of smaller shops. It was certainly the place to go as a teenager in the sixties.

My father is the baker at Higbie Bagels, and I helped out my dad for a bit

What about Baldwin Manor catering hall and the BMB (Baldwin Manor Boutique) which really was a head shop. Up north, Queen Rose 5 and 10 cent store, Busy Bee Cleaners, Dairy Barn, China Royal Restaurant in the King Kullen shopping center. And of course, the wonderful Danny's Haven!! Best bar pie on the planet.
Up North we had Terranova's Produce Stand and Florist on Grand Avenue. Danny's Haven was the best--does anybody remember "The Hayloft" which burned in a fire in the 1960's?? Wonderful Pizza in the "Fairview" Shopping center. Down by the Baldwin Shopping center we had A&P, the old Carvel Drive-In Stand (I used the love the big cones on top of the building) Bohack's, (now a Chinese buffet)the Fabric Garden (now a rental store),
the original Mr. Cookie (which used to be a Dan's Supreme), Hotis Ice Cream (on Baldwin Road). Gosh, that Steer-Inn sign that stood for years after it closed used to read "Hot Roast Beef Sandwiches".....The old Baldwin School for boys which became condominimums.
