How about Gimbels, Horn and Hardart Restaurant, and the food counter at Woolworth's? Hempstead Turnpike was really hoppin' with May's, Grants, and Wilfred's Coffee Shop. Anyone remember a restaurant across the street called Fiesta? It predated Lum's and only stayed a few years. Car hop service; you just phoned in your order from your car using a special phone in a toll booth like parking space. You also had the option of eating inside where each table had one of those order phones! It was so innovative and was my favorite place to eat as a child!

I don't remember it not being an indoor mall, but I do remember when it only had 1 floor. What year was it when it was an outdoor mall? I am thinking before my time, lol.

when i was a student at new york insitute of technology in manhattan i did a model of roosevelt field mall as a project for my city planning course. i think it was in 65 since i was graduated in 67. the mall was NOT enclosed and it was one story, except i think i remember one or two buildings were two story. during that same period best i can remember they were drag racing the 1/8 mile in the parking lot and i raced a few times. after someone got sideways and wandered into a light pole they stopped.

I think Roosevelt Field underwent the transformation around the mid 60's.
Then Alexanders moved in.

I loved the old fountains. Sometimes people (read that as kids) would throw detergent or bubble bath in the fountains.. and they'd be bubbling away.

You could also buy soft pretzels, cotton candy and knishes at the kiosk.
Pop a balloon at the Woolworth lunch counter for your banana split discount.
Macy's had their photo studio tucked in a far corner in back of the China and Crystal department! What were they thinking???!!!! Mothers dragging their kids through the department.. mine included.

What happened? Think about it. We have more people......and fewer DIFFERENT stores now than when I was growing up. I just don't get it.

I remember Alexander's being next to a bridal shop, where we used to go in and try on gowns. I don't think the salesladies believed that we were all brides! :>

No, this was way before karaoke back in the mid 60's. It later became Uncle Sam's which was a night club/bar. Is that what you're thinking of? I have no idea what's there now, it's been so long since I've been back. I do remember the "3000" building was near there. And Dragon Villa our favorite Chinese restaurant.

Ok what was that soda/ice cream place in Babylon that served sundays in a mini bathtube? Later it was a dance club. HMMMMMMMM and thanks for making me think Wetsons was not a figment of my imagination.
