We used to go the the Schaefer Concerts at Wolman Rink in central park every day after work in the summer. (This was when young people from Long Island could still afford the LIRR commute to find jobs in the city.) Tickets were $2.00. If the scalpers were charging more then $5 it was too much and we would sit on "the rocks" to watch the show.

Memory Lane
Wow. I've read almost every thread the past 4 days during my lunch hour and it was like going back to my childhood. I grew up in Bay Shore (Oak Park Elementary, South Jr Hight, Brentwood Ross HS '76) and remember so many of the places everybody has been talking about on Long Island. I live in Maryland 10 yrs now and as much as I like it, I miss the pizza, bakeries, butchers, etc that I got used to on Long Island. I still have family there and visit often but it's certainly not the same. I would not come back to live there because it would destroy the great memories I have of growing up in a neighborhood where everybody knew everybody and I had the same neighbors on my street throughout my childhood.
Since everybody seems to focus on stores and places of interest, I just thought I'd contribute. Benjiman's Beach at the Bay Shore Marina, Charlie Hot Dog on Spur Drive & Islip Ave, The Farmers Market off of Sunrise Hwy and Brentwood Rd, Entenmanns Bakery before it got to big for itself, the junk years on Saxon Ave to get parts for our street rods, Woods Apparel where we all had to buy our gym shorts and t-shirt, Brentwood HS Wrestling - I hear we won the Counties this year.
I remember calling the WBAB Hotline on Friday night to see what bands were playing at the bars. In addition to the big name bands that eventually made albums (Good Rats, Twisted Sister, BOC, Zebra, Fog Hat), my favorite bar band was White Fire. They played The Boys are Back In Town and Jailbreak as good as Thin Lizzy did. Rum Bottoms, Mad Hatter, Cheers, Speaks, OBI North, Soloman Grundy's - all good hangouts......... "and if the boys want to fight you better let them."
I remember playing baseball at any vacant lot we could find every day of the summer. I rode my Schwinn Stingray bike with my baseball mitt hung over the butterfly handlebars and my bat jammed under the banana seat. Most days the street was our playground and we played every sport there was until we got called in to eat or because it was dark an hour ago. We had good clothes for school and dungarees for play. Our sports drink was water from a garden hose. We chose sides using the odds/evens 1-2-3 shoot method. Life was good and I'll never forget all the great things Long Island had to offer. Thanks to all for reminding me.

The Old LI Clubs
From somewhere around 1979 through 1984 I played in Otter Creek. It was a band that played Southern Rock and Party music and had been a good country band before that.
See if any of these places we used to play ring a bell ...
Soloman Grundy's Clipper
Soloman Grundy's frigate
Good Times Commack
Good Times Massapequa
Hammerheads (Party with The Creek Tuesdays - $2 Buds and 2000 people)
Cheers
Tueys
Mad Hatter Stoneybrook and East Quogue
Speaks
Rum Bottoms
Reinhardts
Silver Dollar Saloon
Pastime Pub
Sundance
Gemini
Golden Rock Cafe
Glenn Island Casino
Mothers
My Father's Place
Detroit
There's tons more ...

What a blast from the past
I just read through this whole thread and thoroughly enjoyed it.
My husband and I grew up in Port Jeff in the 60's and 70's, moved to Sound Beach and Rocky Point after we were married. Left LI in 1988 for Florida.
We are coming for a short visit on April 12th and cannot wait to have real pizza, an egg sandwich on a real roll and anything from a real bakery.
It was great to read about all the LI bands and bars. My husband was a muscian who played at all the usual haunts during the late 70's and '80's. Hammerhead, Mad Hatter, Spies, Cheers etc. Sorry to hear that so many of them are now gone.
It was a great place to grow up and miss LI very much. Who knows what this little trip might inspire?
I found this list after googling for someplace on LI and once here I couldn't leave.
Thank you for such a wonderful trip down memory lane.
