You know you're from Long Island when:
Jones Beach Theater is the best place in the world to see a concert.
Billy Joel said it best, “Either you date a rich girl from the North Shore, or a cool girl from the South Shore."
What’s the big deal about the Hamptons?
You don’t go to Manhattan, you go to “the City"
You never, ever want to “change at Jamaica..."
You never realize you have an accent until you leave.
You can name at least three bands that came from Long Island.
At some point in your life you or someone you know has owned an animal that came from North Shore Animal League.
You walk around the mall aimlessly.
When you walk in the city and you see two men holding hands...it becomes normal to you.
No word ends in an ER, just an AH.
When you’re away from Long Island, you love it and when you’re there, you don’t.
You know that the beach is the most magical place in the world at night.
You know the exact point at which Queens turns into Nassau simply on intuition.
You’re still waiting for a bridge to Connecticut.
You’ve tried to use your father’s monthly ticket to ride the LIRR. It worked.
No matter what you do, you end up at the diner.
Your distant future might involve the state of Florida.
You’ve tried to find the Amityville Horror house.
Each one of your diverse friends mercilessly makes fun of his own background.
You love that salty smell of the ocean.
No, you don’t want mustard on that burger!
One of the most exciting days of your summer is when the tickets to the Jones Beach Theatre shows go on sale.
You know White Castle is terrible for you and the food sucks. But, you periodically “Get the Crave".
You can order a pizza pie and a soda and people will understand.
You don’t associate Fire Island with gay men.
You know that parts of The Godfather were filmed on LI.
You have, or someone you know has, fallen asleep on the LIRR and ended up in one of these three places: Babylon, Port Washington or Hicksville.
You’ve missed that “Drunk Train”, the 2:42 out of Penn and had the dreaded wait until 5:30.
You think Islip MacArthur airport is cute and you enjoy watching it grow up.
Your parents took you to Nathans or Carvel.
You can correctly pronounce places like Happaugue, Commack, Islip, Islandia, Nissequogue, Wantagh, and Massapequa.
You know the location of 6 malls, a dozen McDonalds, and 36 7-11’s.
You grew up thinking Chinese food was a basic food group.
You’re used to driving down the street in December and seeing more light-up menorahs than you can shake a latka at. In fact, even your non-Jewish friends know what Matzoh is. And you’ve never driven more than 10 miles without seeing a temple.
Oh, your parents are from Brooklyn? So are mine!
Yes, admit it, you’ve cruised the DPA.
You can remember making up rules for 'Shotgun'ť calls in high school.
You were upset when all the Roy Rogers turned into Wendy's.
You actually "get" these jokes and pass them on to other people from Long Island.

This was good. Thanks

oh yeah, anyone else every played Little League in Uniondale 72'-76' our team sponsor was Mikes Pizza, and when we won, we got free pizza,,, guess who had a perfect seaon those years !!!! LOL...
they had the best Sicilian Pizza in the world...bar none...
I moved to Pennsylvania, to Schwensville August 1976, about 10 miles from Pottstown or 50 miles from Philly... We ordered a pizza from PizzaHut, it was one of only a couple restaurants in town and they asked us if we wanted cheese??? we were like what ? When we got the Pizza the cheese had slid off pizza into the corner of the box... I think I cried for a week begging my mom to move us back... We moved to Phoenix 1.5 years later in Jan78' and things just got worse,,,they had no clue what Italian food was or Chinese. At least I got to discover Mexican food, but it took me years before I trusted it enough to try a burrito...lol...
Finally moved to Lost Angeles and found some 1/2way decent pizza. Some guy out here bottles NY tap water and makes the pizza with it, gets all his ingredients back east shipped here, thats about the closest I found to real NY Pizza. Also on Venice boardwalk there is a spot thats good too, but that might because you're always hungry at the beach for some reason and the food always taste better at the beach...maybe your brain goes on mini-vacation mode as soon as it smells the salty air??? hmmm,,,
I might be boring the hell out of some, sorry , but I still miss LI...

how far did u live from long beach?

The Action House (first bar I ever entered and drank at) which became The Rock Pile in Island Park.
How many here can deny having burned some brain cells at the Uniondale Mini Cinema? The midnight shows were THE BEST!
One of the greatest perks of having grown up on LI was the opportunity to see amazing bands live in concert like Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Tull, ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, ELP, the Stones (just to name a few). I never realized how lucky I was until I moved out of state and people were jaw dropped to hear the amount of great concerts I was privileged to attend.
On the musical/band note, Jeffhhs76 mentioned the local band Broken Arrow... my ex husband was one of the founding members of that band and played with them for many many years. I'd kill to have one dollar for every rehearsal and gig I sat through LOL. And on a sad note, Hank Perez (singer/member and brother of guitarist Joey) passed away a few years ago at a very young age (Love and miss you Hanky!)
But one of my fondest memories of living in Island park as a child was bumming $5 off of my father every Saturday and taking my little sister to the boardwalk in Long Beach to go on the rides and play games for tickets/prizes. It's amazing to think that it was normal for parents to allow a youngster to travel that far for a day unattended and not worry about them (I was about 10 at the time and my sis was 6).
|
----so, how far did u live from long beach? ... how the heck did you get there ???
I just had to laugh because I mentioned on another post,,,we'd be like mom we'll see you at lunch , what are we having? ok forget that I'll be home by dinner or dark, whichever one comes first!!!
I must have put 10,000 miles on my schwinn...

check out this map ,is that lake julia on the right???
30 deforest road 11746 - Google Maps
looks like might be a little pond just right of the school...hey the schools website has a nice deer out front..lol... i dont know why but whenever someone mentions something on here u want to google it... even if you never knew of it, just makes u curious if their memories are still intact... for me i checked my old school ,Cornelius Court Elementary in Uniondale (its still there) , it had a big U-shaped driveway, you had to drive in one way street and go out the other, coolest little K-3rd school ever, then Walnut Street School for 4th grade before we moved to Pennsylvania... i also googled Apollo Diner in East Meadow, still there u can see a picture of its red sign out front on its slate exterior... oh yeah Ehrhardts Clam House in Freeport too...

Does anybody remember Harveys or adventurers inn? i know they are long gone but went ther as a kid.I rememner when the Hamptons were sleepy fishing towns. Farmingdale - hardscrabble
---SOMEONE ON HERE , OLDTIMER said Farmingdale was called HardScrabble before it was called Farmingdale. I mentioned that to my mom and she said, she dated a farmer from Farmingdale !!! She moved to LI in late 40's, early 50's... (of course, from Brooklyn),,, and she said her house was only one on the street... people would build there house and move in ,no developers.

----hahahah alll in foster care, for sure,,,my neighbor is a cub scout troop master and football coach, he got called in for pulling his kids ear, he thought was better than spanking them ,but no , they said (state) you can open handed spank their butts , if they cry you stop... , HELL the reason I dont smoke is because my parents used to smoke with the windows rolled up(before auto windows!) and when you tried to put the window down they'd say cut it out its to cold... hahahahah the irony...
