Hicksville (New York, Hempstead, Oyster Bay: houses, neighborhood, school districts)

so my girlfriend and i are looking into houses at Hicksville. we saw a house new the Plainview shopping Center. is that a good area and school district(17)? thanks in advance for your input.

School District No. 17 = Hicksville Union Free School District.

^^^ im all new to this so i dont know what that means. can you please explain "union free" school district? is it a good thing or bad thing? what about neighborhood and the future of hicksville market value? i did a search and didnt come up with much.

"Union Free" basically means that they are free from a union of multiple districts and can operate their own high schools, as opposed to "common districts". Not good or bad, it just is a form of breaking down and classifying the government units.

As far as the future of Hicksville, I'm sure you'll get a lot of arguments going both ways. Generally though, I like the area and see absolutely nothing wrong with it... Unless you're trying to park at the train station.

A union free school district is a district resulting from a "union" of multiple common school districts, "free" from the restrictions that previously barred them from operating high schools. Union free school districts are governed by a board of education composed of between three and nine members.

Most school districts on LI are union free school districts, but there are also many central school districts (most school districts in New York State are central school districts) as well as a few central high school districts. There are some other threads discussing the growing population of South Asians in Hicksville.

Whiile the Hamlet of Hicksville and the Hicksville Union Free School District do not have the exact same border, they are fairly close.


For those who may not be familiar with Hicksville:

Hicksville is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-west part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east-central part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/North Hempstead/Hempstead town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Hicksville in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Jericho and the Hamlet of Syosset; on the east by the Hamlet of Plainview and the Hamlet of Bethpage; on the south by the Hamlet of Levittown in the Town of Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line); and, on the west by the Hamlet of Salisbury in the Town of Hempstead and the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead/North Hempstead town line).





The Hamlet of Hicksville has a different border than does the "Hicksville, NY 11801" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Hicksville and a place can be in the Hamlet of Hicksville and have other than a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address): places with a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Hicksville are in the Hamlet of Jericho; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Hicksville that have a "Bethpage, NY 11714", "Jericho, NY 11753" and "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address.

I have lived in Hicksville for 19 years now with my wife and 4 children. All children went from kindergarden thru 12th grade in the Hicksville school system. Most of the time a great experiance,some times a few minor problems but nothing much. The area is good but busy, very convient but you pay for it in traffic and noise. Homes are from small 2 bedrooms to huge 6 bedroom 3 baths with everything in between.
