I live in Shirley and while it's not the Taj Mahal, I got a nice house house at nice price. Rest assured... there are some of the elements in Mastic/Shirley that people goof on (grown men with mullets and Judas Priest jerseys, a poorly kept house here and there, and other things that will either make you laugh or blanch - depending on your outlook on things) but if you have a sense of humor about it and tend to take things in stride, you'll be ok. There are plenty of upsides to living here - esp if you fish, boat or go to the beach.
If commuting to work via train is as big a priority as your post implies, I'd check the LIRR schedule - the trains run flakey east of Babylon - and flakier still east of Patchogue. You'll want to make sure you're not spending an hour on a platform every day waiting for a transfer to get you home.

I live in Mastic in a really nice area, nothing wrong with the area...it is like anywhere else on LI you have your nice sections and then you have your not so nice areas....As far as the School District it is fine, like all the others on LI...Dont listen to all the people slamming the area...People will all tell you go to the North shore....Sound beach is gross...the houses are like little shacks on small narrow roads...

Somehow, I don't feel that the sources below are talking about the same area, I've heard about.
There's a disconnect, SOMEWHERE, probably with the sources here..figures !

I wasnt going to slam the area but are you out of your effing mind?
I woud take a trailer in Sound Beach over a palace in Mastic.
Sound Beach is a quaint little North Shore Beach community and has much more to offer by way of quality of life and schools.
Although it has its share of bungalows (some run down and seasonal), its the people who live in them that sets them far apart from Mastic in terms of HHI and Education. Dont get me wrong Sound Beach is the probably most blue collar community on the North Shore and it has some poverty tucked away(safely) in it. I would live there in a heart beat I wouldnt worry about locking my doors when I walked to the beach either.
Please dont mislead the board.
Sadly Mastic has become a magnet for Section 8,Level 3 sex offenders, drugs ,crime and drama.
Its a shame because the Tri Hamlet area has HUGE poential but its problem is its people. Its has a ridiculous amount of Civic Associations, all at each others throat, trying dearly to be anything other than Mastic (Tangiers, Floyd Harbor, East Yaphank Puh-Leeeeeeeeez).
Their complete inabiliy to find consensus or garner meanngful resources from their elected officials has cost them dearly over the years.
They really need to get out of their own way and start presenting a unified front to the Town of Brookhaven and hopefully they can avoid the iceberg.

As opposed to the sprawling homes of Mastic, gracing wide luxurious avenues.

If anyone in your family is planning to commute to NYC daily for work, I would say that area is too far out and the LIRR service isn't that great. A friend of mine used to live in PA across the border from southern NJ and she would drive a few minutes to NJ and take an express train to Penn Station. I would recommend her commute before I would from where you are looking at.
Regarding the neighborhood, I don't know anyone who lives there and the closest I have been there is Smith Point beach (which is very nice), so I can't comment on that.
As for near the railroad ... any house right near the tracks will naturally have to hear all the train noise. I suppose people get used to it, but I wouldn't want to be that close. Another thing is having a house near the RR tracks may mean the LIRR could try and get your property (at discount rate of course). I think there are some problems for homeowners in Nassau where the LIRR wants to make another line. I like being walking distance from the LIRR station, but not right near the tracks.
Another thing is do you really need an 8 bedroom home to heat and maintain? Unless you have a lot of kids, that is probably not necessary anyway.

I'm guessing you're talking about Mastic north of the Sunrise, which is definitely a nice area. South of sunrise though, Sound Beach is definitely nicer.

Sound Beach is nowhere near to Sunrise Highway. It's tiny community that is North of 25A near Rocky Point.

I think he means compared to the section of Mastic south of Sunrise.
If I needed to train it, I wouldn't go anywhere remotely that far east. Do not underestimate how exhausting a bad commute can be, especially with driving to the station and getting from Penn to work. My sister did East Northport to lower Manhattan for a year, and she said it was torture. If you want further east in Suffolk, look for somewhere within driving distance of the Ronkonkoma line, or at a pinch between Babylon and Patchogue (the transfer will add time). DON'T buy right by the line--they supposedly made the diesel whistles quieter, but I live a mile from the tracks and I can hear it some nights.
