How is Middle Country Road (25) in Selden? Is it an ok area to stroll around?
Is this road a pleasant one to walk through? How are the shops and restaurants there. What is there to do in Selden in general. I know I've been posting many questions but I am seriously ready to be moving there very soon because of the price range of homes there. We do not have the time to scope out the area except for my husband going there for only two days. We live in Florida, I am 7 months pregnant with our second baby and need to move right away and so any info I can acquire this way is greatly appreciated. Please tell me the pros and cons. Where is the nearest transportation and how far is it? Does anyone know about Dare Road and if it is a very busy major road? Appreciate your time and help!

No. Please use a car. This is a very busy, dangerous 4 lane highway. Any road that has no center median is extremely dangerous. I was seconds behind last weeks accident where 2 men were thrown from their van swerving onto the exit ramp at Nicolls onto Middle Country. Only one survived.
& please wear a seatbelt in the car, they didn't.
As for a pleasant walk, you can drive to the Smithaven Mall, and walk the mall, or take the back roads to Stonybrook or Port Jeff.
I guess you can walk around the streets in your development. My husbands grandfather lived down Marshall Dr which is north of Middle Country. Because the high school was down that street, there were always fast teenage drivers.

I second that. Rt 25 is a major road in the area. Not good for walking.
If you are looking to buy in an area better setup for walking...check out Rocky Point. Nice sidewalks and quiet residential streets. It has a nice downtown area with local shops. My wife takes our girls for walks all the time.
Best of luck...we moved form Utah to LI 2 months after adopting our 2nd child. I think we may be starting to recover :-)

If you are thinking of moving to the Selden area, you really must have a car. That would be true for most of Long Island - the public transportation consists of buses and the Long Island Railroad. The buses are not very extensive in Suffolk County, not sure about Nassau. The LIRR is good for getting you into the city but not really other places on the island. Route 25 is the most dangerous road on Long Island and I would not recommend walking on it or especially crossing the road. I even avoid driving on the road whenever I possibly can. With that said, Selden is a mixed community with regards to housing - some areas are somewhat run-down with small houses, other areas are solid middle class with nice developments, and there are some pockets of new construction. It is very similar to neighboring Centereach. The school district I have heard is decent, but not as good as some surrounding ones (I live in the district also and have my own concerns). Is there a particular reason you are focused on Selden?

Dare Road is a busy road. It is mostly residential. My daughter has a friend tat lives on Dare Road. He goes to Newfield High School. There are no sidewalks. You can't walk with children on the road. He has a nice house but right across the street from him, on Dare Road, is a house that they call the drug dealer house.
I grew up on a busy road & when we bought we made sure it was on a dead end quiet cul de sac. Your children can not ride their bikes, color with sidewalk chalk, or play with their small battery cars on a busy road. There are developments of houses on either side of Dare Road that I am starting to see boarded up foreclosed houses. So there must be bargains off Dare that would be on quieter streets.
Selden is easy to get to the LIE but I don't know where your husband would take the train to the city. As suggested perhaps Ronkonkoma?

I'll second the rocky Point suggestion. It's only about 10-15 minutes further off the beaten path from selden, some might say better schools, and yes, you can safely walk around the downtown area. Added bonus if you like being closer to the beaches etc.
But no, rt 25 in selden is not where you want to be taking a stroll.

Everything that makes aspects of living on Long Island unpleasant is visible on 25 in Centereach and Selden.

Or try Patchogue. You can walk there, it is ok ; I did it with two babies and used to walk to Corey Beach all the time.
You cannot walk around rte 25 in Selden ; esp with two children.
